For parents wondering how to stop teenagers using ChatGPT to do their homework, OpenAI\u2019s latest answer is a version of ChatGPT designed to make them do more of the thinking themselves.<\/p>\n
The company has launched ChatGPT for Teens, designed for users aged 13 to 17, that puts more weight on learning, safety and healthier AI use than the standard product. It brings together existing tools such as Study Mode <\/b>with new Responsible Homework Reminders,<\/b> Study Hours,<\/b> Quizzes <\/b>and Learning Visualisations,<\/b> alongside stronger protections around potentially harmful content, break reminders and expanded parental controls.<\/p>\n
OpenAI says that ChatGPT for Teens is rolling out globally, including Singapore, at launch, initially to a small percentage of users it identifies as being under 18. The company expects the rollout to take a few weeks to reach all identified under-18 users.<\/p>\n
Teenagers don\u2019t have to opt in. If account information, verified age information, or OpenAI\u2019s age-prediction technology indicates someone is under 18, ChatGPT automatically switches them to the teen experience.<\/p>\n

So the company isn\u2019t solving the problem by handing teenagers a dramatically less capable chatbot. It\u2019s changing the rules and the product features around how younger users interact with the same one.<\/p>\n
Unfortunately, they wouldn[\u2018t be drawn into saying which features are removed relative to the adult product, i.e. memory, voice, image generation, custom GPTs, browsing or agentic features.<\/p>\n
The company says these protections build on its Under-18 Model Spec, Teen Safety Blueprint, parental controls and age-prediction technology, guided by four stated principles:\u00a0<\/p>\n

The feature most likely to generate discussion around dinner tables and in classrooms is the Responsible Homework Reminder.<\/p>\n
Study Mode already pushes students to work through problems using questions, explanations and step-by-step guidance instead of producing an answer. OpenAI says it developed it in consultation with teachers, scientists, and pedagogy experts, using techniques such as scaffolding, metacognitive prompts, and knowledge checks.<\/p>\n
ChatGPT for Teens builds on that. When the system thinks a teenager is trying to shortcut an assignment, it can display a Responsible Homework Reminder and redirect the interaction towards Study Mode.<\/p>\n
There\u2019s a caveat, and OpenAI states it plainly.<\/p>\n
\u201cResponsible homework reminders are only prompts that redirect the interaction toward Study Mode to encourage collaborative problem-solving. They are not a guarantee that every attempt to obtain a direct answer will be blocked.\u201d<\/p>\n

OpenAI says it uses \u201cprivacy-preserving signals\u201d and, where information is incomplete or uncertain, applies the safer experience by default.<\/p>\n
The company didn\u2019t provide a false-negative rate, which is the proportion of genuine 13-to-17-year-olds the system fails to identify and leaves in the adult experience. That number would give a much clearer picture of how far the safeguards actually reach. OpenAI also didn\u2019t say what recourse an adult has if the system wrongly reads them as a teenager.<\/p>\n

Once a user is identified as under 18, additional protections apply. OpenAI says these follow the Under-18 Principles in its Model Spec, informed by developmental science and expert guidance, and cover higher-risk areas including self-harm, violence, eating disorders, dangerous activities, and explicit sexual or graphic content.<\/p>\n
The company is also publishing under-18 evaluations in its system cards, showing how its models perform against teen-specific standards in sensitive-content scenarios spanning self-harm, eating disorders, violence, age-restricted goods and services, and sexual content.<\/p>\n
The safeguards don\u2019t mean ChatGPT refuses every difficult subject. That would make it far less useful for legitimate educational questions, and for situations where a teenager is genuinely looking for help. The stated goal is to reduce exposure to material that could be harmful or developmentally inappropriate while preserving the ability to learn, create and explore.<\/p>\n

For parents, one of the more interesting parts of ChatGPT for Teens is what the parental controls don\u2019t allow.<\/p>\n
Linked parents can manage selected settings, set Study Hours and Quiet Hours, and switch features including voice mode and image generation on or off. They cannot read their teenager\u2019s prompts<\/b>, chat history<\/b>, or conversation transcripts<\/b>, and they can\u2019t monitor activity<\/b> in real time. Teenagers can also delete chats without notifying their parents.<\/p>\n
That\u2019s a deliberate separation between oversight and privacy, and a firmer line than the phrase \u201cparental controls\u201d tends to suggest.<\/p>\n
The exception is high-risk situations. A linked parent can receive a safety notification, but OpenAI says it contains only the information needed to support the teenager\u2019s safety, not a copy of the conversation. The teenager is told when an alert has been sent.<\/p>\n
OpenAI is expanding its safety notifications to cover eating disorders and says that asking about the subject isn\u2019t enough to trigger one.<\/p>\n
The notifications are reserved for what the company describes as rare, high-risk situations where activity may indicate a serious risk to the teenager. A specially trained team reviews potential alerts before sending them to confirm that the situation meets the required threshold.<\/p>\n
When it does, the linked parent receives what\u2019s needed to support the teenager rather than the transcript, and the teenager is notified.<\/p>\n
There\u2019s also a provision for teenagers with no linked parental account. In those cases, OpenAI says ChatGPT is designed to encourage support from a trusted adult or another real-world resource, without assuming that person has to be a parent.<\/p>\n
ChatGPT doesn\u2019t want to become your teenager\u2019s best friend<\/h2>\n
One of the bigger changes has nothing to do with homework. OpenAI is explicitly trying to prevent teenagers from forming an unhealthy emotional dependence on ChatGPT.<\/p>\n
Its updated under-18 Model Spec says ChatGPT should not use romantic language, encourage emotional dependence, or imply that it has feelings or consciousness.<\/p>\n
Asked what happens when a teenager repeatedly turns to ChatGPT for support instead of a parent, teacher, counsellor or friend, the company says the system is built around holding that line.<\/p>\n
\u201cAI can help teens understand difficult concepts, practise new skills and build confidence, but it should never replace independent thinking, real-world relationships or support from trusted adults,\u201d OpenAI tells HardwareZone.<\/p>\n
When conversations lean toward isolation, exclusivity, or replacing real-world relationships, OpenAI says ChatGPT is designed to reinforce boundaries and encourage the teenager to seek offline support. Break reminders<\/b> also prompt teenagers to disconnect.<\/p>\n
When asked how emotional dependence is defined in operational terms, so that a model can act on it, and how the company measures whether the safeguard works, OpenAI didn\u2019t say. But the words isolation, exclusivity and substitution are as specific as the answer gets.<\/p>\n

ChatGPT has to be approachable enough for a teenager to feel comfortable asking questions, while staying clearly artificial enough that it doesn\u2019t stand in for friends, parents, teachers or counsellors. OpenAI says it continues to refine these tools using evidence and expert feedback.<\/p>\n
But parents should consider one privacy detail. Content from teen accounts may be used to improve OpenAI\u2019s models, depending on the account\u2019s Data Controls. Both teenagers and linked parents can disable the model-improvement setting, and OpenAI says that when it\u2019s off, chats and the content within them aren\u2019t used to improve its models.<\/p>\n

The harder test comes when teenagers start pushing the edges. Responsible Homework Reminders<\/b> can steer students towards solving problems themselves, but OpenAI says they aren\u2019t hard blocks. Age prediction<\/b> can catch accounts where someone entered an inaccurate age, but the company won\u2019t say how often it misses. Safety notifications<\/b> can alert parents to serious risk while leaving conversations private, but something still has to judge when that threshold is crossed.<\/p>\n
