Past Top Chef<\/em> winner Kristen Kish admits she did not watch many reality competitions before taking the helm of Bravo\u2019s cooking contest in 2024. Since then, she has been skirting any attempt at comparison with either Tim Gunn (whose empathetic mentorship of flailing fashion designers defined Project Runway<\/em> for a generation of viewers), her predecessor Padma Lakshmi<\/span> or The Traitors<\/em> emcee Alan Cumming.<\/div>\n

But she acknowledges that her distinct approach \u2013 kinder, gentler, more tearful \u2013 is rooted in her particular skill set.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s similar to how I responded to being led in kitchens,\u201d she says. \u201cYou don\u2019t lead with fear. You lead with compassion and empathy and encouragement and confidence. And two things can be true at the same time \u2026 I can require more from them, and I can also cry because I\u2019m filled with joy for their progress.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nominated for Emmys in the reality competition series and reality host categories (among others), Top Chef: Carolinas<\/em> \u2013 the 23rd season of Top Chef<\/em> \u2013 epitomises Kish\u2019s swift remaking of the role in her own image. The season, which concluded in June, finds Kish comforting a distraught chef and navigating thorny questions of fairness and wellness.<\/p>\n

Here she revisits this season\u2019s most talked-about moments, recent criticism of the format and the hard work of being a good host.<\/p>\n
