There are some things a teenager probably does not expect Instagram to tell their parents, and their search activity would surely be one of them. That is about to change, although for a rather serious reason: Instagram can now<\/b> alert parents when their teen repeatedly searches for terms associated with suicide or self-harm<\/b> within a short period.<\/p>\n
The feature was first announced in February and initially rolled out in the US, UK, Australia and Canada, before expanding to the European Union, Brazil and India. Meta says the alerts are now available globally to supervising parents, so families in Singapore should be able to use them too.<\/p>\n
That\u2019s not to say Instagram will begin forwarding an entire search history to mum and dad. The alerts apply only to parents and teens using the platform\u2019s supervision tools, and Meta says it takes several relevant searches within a short period of time before one is sent. Meta has also not revealed the exact number but says it settled on the threshold after \u201cstudying search behaviour and consulting safety experts\u201d.<\/p>\n Image: Meta<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n Once triggered, the alert can be delivered through Instagram, email, text message or WhatsApp, depending on the contact details available. It tells the parent that their teen has repeatedly attempted to search for terms associated with suicide or self-harm, and offers resources and directions to seek professional help. In a Meta blog post, it explains that parents are warned about the pattern of searches rather than being given a list of every phrase entered, so as to preserve some privacy for the affected teenager.<\/p>\n Of course, that does not make the feature any less uncomfortable. There may be perfectly innocent reasons for looking up these subjects, and Meta acknowledges that some parents could be notified when there is no real cause for concern. But it would rather err on the side of caution than stay silent when a teenager may need help, and this is probably one situation where an awkward conversation between a parent and child is preferable to having no conversation at all.<\/p>\n Meta is not stopping with Instagram searches either.
