Director Shawn Levy<\/u> has revealed that Star Wars: Starfighter<\/u> follows characters \u201cfrom the wrong side of the galaxy\u201d in a story that drew inspiration from Francis Ford Coppola\u2019s 1983 film, The Outsiders<\/u>.<\/p>\n

Coppola\u2019s The Outsiders adapted S.E. Hinton\u2019s classic young adult novel about clashing teens in 1960s Oklahoma. Hinton\u2019s tale depicts the increasingly violent and tragic antagonism between the working class \u201cGreasers\u201d and the upper-middle-class “Socs”. <\/p>\n

Speaking with Fandango<\/u> over the weekend at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event<\/u>, Levy said he and star Ryan Gosling<\/u> sparked to that idea that the protagonists of Starfighter could, like the Greasers, come from \u201cthe wrong side of the tracks.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re not the privileged ones. They\u2019re from the wrong side of the tracks,\u201d Levy said. \u201cOur characters in Starfighter are from the wrong side of the galaxy. And it\u2019s about these sort of marginalized outsiders who find each other and have a shot at discovering heroism through their connections.\u201d<\/p>\n

Starfighter follows Gosling\u2019s pilot Kade Auberon<\/u> who teams up with a kid (newcomer Flynn Gray<\/u>) on an adventure that, although only set about five years after<\/u> the events of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, will not feature any “legacy characters”<\/u> nor any \u201cremixes\u201d of John Williams\u2019 iconic themes<\/u> in its score.<\/p>\n

Levy told Fandango \u201cthere was just something kind of blue-collar, working class, grounded and textured and real to The Outsiders that we tried to bring to Star Wars and to Starfighter. Yes, it\u2019s set in space. It\u2019s high tech. There\u2019s lots of visual effects, but it\u2019s very much grounded in characters and grounded in the stuff of these characters doing the best they can in a chaotic galaxy that hasn\u2019t yet been explored.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Outsiders featured a murderer\u2019s row of then-upcoming talent, including Tom Cruise, who visited the set of Starfighter<\/u> where he helped Levy and Gosling film a lightsaber duel.<\/p>\n

In addition to Levy and Gray, Starfighter\u2019s cast also includes Matt Smith<\/u>, Mia Goth<\/u>, Aaron Pierre, Simon Bird, Jamael Westman, Daniel Ings, and Amy Adams.<\/p>\n

Star Wars: Starfighter opens in theaters on May 28, 2027.<\/p>\n
