First impressions upon arrival at dusk are of a typical second-tier city composed chiefly of modern high-rises strung together by flyovers. My mood isn’t much improved by the hotel I pre-booked, which is located down a gloomy Shizhong district alley, past street-side barbecue joints populated by drunks, with electrical wires dangling overhead and between adverts for spas and KTV (karaoke television) lounges. The labyrinth of hotel corridors has tobacco-stained carpets and room service comes courtesy of R2-D2-like robots.

“Peking wore the green lace of spring, its thousands of willows and imperial cypresses making the Forbidden City a place of wonder and enchantment,” American…

[4840
6292,16163,4303,3862
post-77357","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-travel-globetrotting","tag-chinas","tag-highspeed","tag-journey","tag-present","wpcat-4840-id
["GET
