There’s also Marrow Keep, where most friendly NPCs reside.

As your character, the Harbinger, goes about exploring, you want to keep your eyes peeled for Ruk and beacons. Ruk is a mysterious bird akin to a crow or raven. If you see him perched atop a landmark, chances are there’s a map that you can pick up. Each map reveals a small zone in the region. Beacons, meanwhile, act as bonfires and fast travel points. You can replenish your health and resolve, though it causes regular enemies to respawn.

Related guides:

All Ruk’s maps and fast travel beacons

Where to go first

Ruk often hands you a map of the zone.

Make the game easier or harder

Soulslike games are meant to be tough and challenging. They’re meant to test your mettle–each death is just part of the learning process, leading to victories that are much more rewarding.

That said, a Mortal Shell 2 tip to keep in mind is that it’s still possible to change the game’s difficulty. Once you pick up an item known as the Slayer Seal, you’ll gain powerful new abilities with your character, including new ways to stagger and stun your foes. Unfortunately, equipping this item also disables achievements for your current save file.

On the flipside, there’s also the option to make the game harder by turning day into night. While “Night Mode” is active, enemies are faster and stronger, though they also tend to drop higher coins and gloom.

Related guide: How to change difficulty – Slayer Seal and Gloombound Flame/Night Mode

The Slayer Seal makes the game way too easy.

Unlock shells with powerful abilities

Similar to the first game, Mortal Shell 2 has you scrounging the world in search of shells. These are the forgotten remains of warriors–some are long interred and buried, while others have just recently passed.

Once unlocked, shells provide you with new ways to eliminate your foes through active and passive skills. For instance, the sneaky Tiel can cloak himself in shadows to stealthily backstab targets. The venerable Eredrim, meanwhile, is a knight who specializes in staggering opponents; the bounty hunter Proxima gets into the thick of the fray with her Biosampler grapple; and the doughy Lazlo is a tanky noble who’s able to beef up his defenses significantly.

Related guide: All shell locations

Make use of Tiel’s sneakiness (left) and Lazlo’s defensive specialization (right).

Leveling up: Gloom and Glimpse

There are, essentially, two intertwined leveling systems in Mortal Shell 2. One involves boosting your character, the Harbinger, while the other involves the shells you’ve unlocked.

Character leveling:

Uses gloom as a resource. Think of this as similar to souls or runes in other games in the genre. These are lost if you die, but you still have a chance to reacquire them from near where you perished–i.e. “corpse runs.” But if your character dies before they can grab the resource, then it’s gone for good.

Increases the health of the Harbinger and shells in general.

Also increases your base damage, shell ability damage, and critical damage.

At certain levels, you also gain shell points, which are used to activate perks.

Shell leveling:

You don’t necessarily increase your shells’ levels by earning XP. Instead, you deepen your bonds with them through a resource called Glimpse. These items are often obtained from beacons that you cleanse.

In most cases, shell bonds are increased via the Shellkeeper NPC in Marrow Keep.

You unlock additional shell memories, as well as higher-tier perk options. The perks are then selected via the aforementioned shell points.

Shell points can still be reset, so you’re free to “respec” to come up with a viable build.

Boost the Harbinger and your favorite shells.

Shell bonds and builds: Maxing out bonds, choosing shell perks, and status effect immunity

As mentioned above, you have to spend Glimpse to increase your bonds with shells. In our playthrough, we had obtained the eight shells in the game proper whose bonds can be increased. We had also collected around 90 Glimpse, though we had to use a few so we could permanently summon shell allies during boss fights:

You only need 1x Glimpse to increase each shell’s bond to level 1. This also unlocks tier 1 perks.

You need a total of 27x Glimpse to max out each shell’s bond from level 0 to level 4. By then, you’ll have unlocked a shell’s tier 4 perks.

The above gives you a few options for your first playthrough (assuming you decide to spend a few Glimpse for shell summons against bosses):

Option 1: You can max out three shells, while others are at level 1 bond.

Option 2: You can max out two shells, while the rest are at different bond levels.

Option 3: Don’t max out a shell and just have everyone at various bond levels.

Spending Glimpse to maximize your bond with a shell tends to be irreversible (unless you’re using a backup save). That’s why a Mortal Shell 2 tip to keep in mind is that you need to be mindful of which shell playstyles you really like.

You also need to consider that certain shell perks become extremely viable for endgame content, while others have a more general purpose. It’s also worth noting that, at tier 1 bond, most shells have selectable perks that grant status effect immunity. If you’re having trouble in an area or with a particular boss because you keep getting poisoned, frozen, or burned, you can switch to a shell that makes you immune to those debuffs.

The Shellkeeper (left) unlocks new shell memories (right).

You still have a fighting chance even if you get separated from your shell

Think of shells as husks that the Harbinger inhabits, like an armor that you don for long periods. However, if your health gets fully depleted, the Harbinger will get separated from the shell, and you’ll have to contend with hostiles without the usual abilities to aid you.

At this stage, you need to be extra careful while on the offensive. Keep hitting enemies to fill up your shell meter. Once full, you can reactivate your shell, which would be at low health. But if you perish as the Harbinger, then you’ll respawn at the last beacon that you tagged, and you’ll have no choice but to do a “corpse run” to retrieve your lost gloom.

You have a chance to return to your shell while in Harbinger form.

Be on the lookout for Revered Glands and Synaptic Vessels

Having a tough time surviving out in the wilderness? Don’t fret because you can still improve your Mether’s Pulse–i.e. healing flask. While roaming around, keep your eyes peeled for two integral items: Revered Glands and Synaptic Vessels.

Revered Glands increase the number of Mether’s Pulse charges, while Synaptic Vessels increase the amount of HP healed. Just remember that higher levels require even more of these resources.

Improved healing via your Mether’s Pulse is a good thing.

Collect every weapon and sidearm

There are eight weapons and eight sidearms in Mortal Shell 2. Melee weapons include swords, scythes, axes, and various blades combined with axes, like the Axe & Dagger and Axatana. Sidearms include those with a dark fantasy flair, like bolt-shooting crossbows, nail-blasting shotguns, and even an effigy that drains the life from your victims.

Shooting with a sidearm uses up your resolve–i.e. mana. However, hitting enemies with your melee weapons fills it gradually. It’s also worth adding that a vendor in Marrow Keep, Merrick, sells maps that show you the locations of these weapons, but you don’t need to spend your hard-earned coins on those since we’ve got a complete guide for you.

Related guide: All weapon and sidearm locations

Weapons like the Great Martyr’s Blade deal decent damage.

Combat capabilities: Blocks, parries, hardening, and ripostes

Another Mortal Shell 2 tip that you should remember is that your survivability boils down to how well you can mitigate or avoid the damage dealt by enemies. That’s where different types of seals come into play:

Untarnished Seal – Allows you to block incoming attacks. A nicely timed perfect guard deals break damage.

Vatra’s Seal – Causes your body to harden, which nullifies the next incoming attack. A perfect harden deals break damage.

Infinite Seal – Parry an incoming attack, dealing more break damage but at greater risk.

Slayer Seal – As stated earlier, this grants powerful abilities that help you stagger foes, but it also disables achievements.

The goal is to fill up your target’s break meter, which will cause them to get momentarily stunned. If you press the attack button while in front of them, you’ll perform a brutal riposte. Conversely, if you mistime your defensive actions, you’ll be in for a world of hurt. In the case of the Untarnished Seal, defending against attacks while keeping the block button held down builds up your break meter. If you’re the one who gets staggered, you’ll be left reeling and unable to move or heal for a few seconds.

Related guide: Infinite Seal – How to parry

Stagger your opponent and follow up with a riposte.

Mix-and-match Tarstones to create unique builds

Tarstones are another means of unlocking your character’s full potential. When used in conjunction with shell perks, you can come up with some amazing builds.

Tarstones come in four categories:

Support – Provides passive effects regardless of the weapon or sidearm equipped.

Combat – Triggers certain effects, usually on-hit or upon firing.

Infusion – Hold down the corresponding button to infuse your weapon/sidearm with a status effect, such as poison, curse, frost, and so on. This costs resolve.

Ability – Activate the corresponding button to unleash a devastating ability. This costs resolve.

It’s worth noting that most Combat, Infusion, and Ability Tarstones have restrictions on which weapons and sidearms can have them equipped. For example, the Emberseed Stone, which infuses sidearms with burn, is only for the Naylshotte, Forgotten Crossbow, and Ballistazooka. So, no, you can’t have scorching projectiles with your Triarch Repeater or Cursed Child.

Activating a weapon infusion takes a few seconds.

Improve your weapons, sidearms, and Tarstones via the Tarforge

All weapons, sidearms, and Tarstones can be boosted further via the Tarforge, an ancient machine in Marrow Keep.

The Tarforge requires several items that unlock key functions. Most of these are handed to an NPC named Franz.

These functions include a means of upgrading your weapons and sidearms to increase their attack power. You can also smelt them, causing them to revert back to level 0, while also refunding the resources.

Tarstones, meanwhile, accumulate XP if you have them equipped as you kill enemies. When you temper–i.e. level up–a Tarstone to level 2, you’ll receive a Tarcore. But, if you plan on leveling up a Tarstone to level 3, you need 6x Tarcore for the process.

In short, the idea is to have almost all Tarstones reach level 2 just to amass a bunch of Tarcores. The ones that you’ve collected are then used to improve the Tarstones that offer game-changing boons.

Related guide: Tarcore items – How to upgrade your Tarstones, weapons, and sidearms

The Tarforge has everything you need for gear-related upgrades.

Take note of active and passive effects of items

Mortal Shell 2’s item mechanic is unlike that of many adventure and RPG games where consumables are lost upon use. Here’s the gist:

Items can be equipped in an active slot (left-click in your inventory) or passive slot (right-click in your inventory). You pick different items for each slot.

Consumables–such as Weltcaps, Tarspores, Galvanic Shards, Sheephead Totems, and the like–are pooled in your inventory. This is related to the “Familiarity” mechanic.

Familiarity – The more items of a particular type that you’ve collected, the higher the tier of active and passive effects.

Let’s use the Weltcap at tier 1 Familiarity as an example:

Active slot: Restores 20% health over 30 seconds.

Passive slot: Slowly refills health to 20%.

Next, if you collect a dozen or so Weltcaps to reach tier 2 Familiarity:

Active slot: Can be used one additional time per rest.

Passive slot: Slowly refills health to 35%.

By the time you’ve reached tier 3 Familiarity:

Active slot: Restores 50% over 30 seconds.

Passive slot: Slowly refills health to a maximum proportional to the total number of Weltcaps found.

Some items are better off in the active slot, while others are more viable for the passive slot.

Vendors and coins: Stuff to buy and junk to sell

There are several vendor NPCs in the world of Mortal Shell 2. For instance, the aforementioned Merrick in Marrow Keep sells consumables, Revered Glands, Synaptic Vessels, weapon maps, and a couple of Tarstones. You can also encounter others as you explore various regions.

Just beware, though, because there are quests and events that cause other vendor NPCs to die. You need to buy the stuff you need from them before they’re gone.

We also recommend selling junk items that you don’t need so you can amass more coins. Even things that you found in well-hidden spots–i.e. Coin of Mammon, Tooth of Nochte, Devout Chalice, and more–if it says that an item can be traded, then you should just sell it.

Lastly, if you’re looking for a reliable coin-farming method, then you should unlock Proxima’s Collector perk. With it, you’ll be able to gather Extracted Specimens from slain opponents. Specimens are universal regardless of the type of enemy you kill, and each one can be sold for 100x coins.

Collect various junk items like Extracted Specimens (left) and sell them to vendors (right).

Apply status effects, such as confusion, to enemies

Here are some status effects that you can apply to enemies:

Poison – A long-lasting effect that deals damage over time.

Burn – Deals accumulated damage over time.

Lightning – Deals damage over time; repeated applications cause a shockwave to be released.

Frost – Can freeze your target for a duration.

Curse – Nullifies a target’s next melee attack against you and turns it back upon them.

Bloodcurse – Deals massive damage once sufficient stacks are inflicted.

Stasis – Slows down the target; multiple stacks worsen the effect.

Trauma – Deals break damage over time.

Phantom – Deals accumulated splash damage and break damage when it expires.

Weak – Targets deal less damage.

Fragile – Take bonus damage from melee weapon attacks.

Perforation – Take bonus damage from sidearm attacks.

There’s one status effect that’s highly useful in situations where you face huge crowds of enemies.
