The displays often draw crowds to the area to take photos.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-primary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">This year, however, the CFC will no longer put up decorations along the two main streets. Instead, lanterns will be displayed at selected locations, alongside community-led celebrations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-primary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">According to a statement issued by the committee on Aug 14, this year\u2019s highlight is \u201cLight a Lantern, Share Your Blessing\u201d \u2014 a community-built lantern display carrying handwritten well-wishes.<\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"my-lg md:my-xl\">\n<p><hr class=\"flex-1 border-grayscale-100 lg:hidden\"\/><span class=\"text-grayscale-400 text-14 leading-16 font-primary text-center lg:text-left p-sm\">Scroll to continue reading<\/span><\/p>\n<hr class=\"flex-1 border-grayscale-100 my-md\"\/>\n<hr class=\"my-md border-grayscale-100\"\/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"font-primary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">Residents will be invited to participate by writing their own well-wishes on lanterns, which will then be displayed at Kreta Ayer Square and Banda Street.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"lg:text-28 lg:leading-33.6px pt-md font-primary text-24 font-bold leading-1.2\">Creating a new tradition: Committee chairman<\/h2>\n<p class=\"font-primary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">Explaining the change, CFC chairman Peh Cheng Hoo said that it was time to shift focus to the local community, given that such large-scale festive decorations are &#8220;regularly seen\u201d at major attractions like Gardens by the Bay and Jurong Lake Gardens.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-primary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">He added that street lantern decorations in Chinatown will continue to be present at the CFC\u2019s flagship festival during Chinese New Year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-primary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">\u201cWe hope to create a new Mid-Autumn tradition with our community lantern display at Kreta Ayer Square,\u201d Peh said.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"lg:text-28 lg:leading-33.6px pt-md font-primary text-24 font-bold leading-1.2\">Some visitors disappointed at lack of large-scale decorations<\/h2>\n<p class=\"font-primary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">According to<a class=\"text-primary-brand no-underline hover:underline\" href=\"https:\/\/www.zaobao.com.sg\/news\/singapore\/story20260815-9523689\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Shin Min Daily News,<\/a> some members of the public were disappointed at the announcement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-primary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">Lin Huiling (transliterated), a 45-year-old administrative worker who visits <a class=\"text-primary-brand no-underline hover:underline\" href=\"https:\/\/www.stomp.sg\/singapore-seen\/mid-autumn-festival-ornaments-with-inappropriate-greetings-to-be-replaced-before?ref=inline-article-9524341\" target=\"_blank\" data-discover=\"true\" rel=\"noopener\">Chinatown<\/a> regularly for the Mid-Autumn Festival decorations, said she was disappointed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-primary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">She said she used to bring her children to Chinatown every year to take photos. When they were younger, they would be especially excited to see the elaborate Chang\u2019e and Jade Rabbit lanterns.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-primary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">\u201cIt has become a kind of family tradition for us. Suddenly, it\u2019s gone this year, and it feels like something essential to the festival is missing. Still, I hope the community activities will be lively. Otherwise, it will really feel much quieter,\u201d Lin said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-primary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">Yang Guizhi (transliterated), a woman in her 70s, said she would look out for the decorations each year, and snap photos to show her friends.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-primary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">She said it was a pity that there would be no decorations this year, adding that she was unsure whether the community activities would be equally exciting.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"lg:text-28 lg:leading-33.6px pt-md font-primary text-24 font-bold leading-1.2\">Resident: Celebrations should bring people together<\/h2>\n<p class=\"font-primary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">However, some members of the public had a different view.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-primary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">Mr Wu, a 68-year-old resident, felt the festival should not be reduced to another Instagrammable experience, but should instead focus on bringing people together.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-primary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">\u201cI think it\u2019s more meaningful for Chinatown to have residents write their own messages on lanterns and hang them up.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"lg:text-28 lg:leading-33.6px pt-md font-primary text-24 font-bold leading-1.2\">Businesses: Decision has little impact on business<\/h2>\n<p class=\"font-primary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">Businesses Shin Min spoke to said the lack of decorations would have little impact on their operations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-primary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">Mr Fang, 65, who has been selling souvenirs at a stall in Chinatown for more than 20 years, said the large-scale decorations in previous years had not provided a noticeable boost to his business.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-primary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">\u201cPerhaps the community activities could even make the area livelier,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"lg:text-28 lg:leading-33.6px pt-md font-primary text-24 font-bold leading-1.2\">Mid-Autumn Festival activities to begin on Sept 11<\/h2>\n<p class=\"font-primary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">According to the CFC\u2019s statement, residents can visit booths set up at the Kreta Ayer Community Club and various grassroots events between Sept 11 and Oct 4 to write their well-wishes on lanterns.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-primary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">A dedicated celebration will be held at 6pm on Sept 19, featuring a Community Lantern Procession, a mooncake and tea appreciation session, and lantern riddles presented in Singapore\u2019s four official languages.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-primary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">In addition to the main celebration at Kereta Ayer Square, smaller editions will be held at River Place, Havelock View and Chin Swee-Hong Lim.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"bg-primary-100 h-px border-0 mt-lg md:mt-xxl\"\/>\n<div class=\"flex flex-col gap-xl rounded-xl border border-primary-100 mt-lg md:mt-xxl\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stomp.sg\/assets\/stomp-comment-COLiWNMD.png\" alt=\"Stomp Comment\" class=\"absolute -mt-lg -ml-xs w-[203px] md:w-[255px]\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Have something to say?
