For those unfamiliar with the whole business of betas, Apple offers two betas for its new software platforms.

The developer beta is often released immediately after the WWDC keynote and is meant to give developers a feel of the new platform and its features. And then a month later is when the public beta typically gets released. This is the version intended for regular users like you and me to install and try.

Typically, I don’t install betas on my primary device for fear that something might go wrong. But to get the best out of Siri AI and have it be useful, you really need to run it on your primary device so that it can index your messages and emails. And so, I decided to #yolo and, in the eternal words of Nike, “Just do it.”

Happily, other than some app icons not appearing properly in Spotlight search, it’s been going swell. All the apps that I frequently use still work as they should (banking apps and Singpass included), battery life doesn’t appear to be adversely affected either, and I’m discovering new ways to use Siri AI as the days pass.

You will see this new option in the Wi-Fi settings menu.

Photo: HWZ

But my favourite feature has to be how iOS 27 is more intelligent at switching to cellular connectivity when Wi-Fi is weak. To be clear, earlier versions of iOS have had a feature like this called Wi-Fi Assist, which uses taps on cellular when Wi-Fi is weak. Sadly, it didn’t work very well because the phone’s default behaviour, it seems, is to hang on to Wi-Fi connection as much as possible. To get around this, most users, me included, often had to resort to turning off Wi-Fi to force the phone to switch to cellular.

In OS 27, however, this feature appears to have a new name called Connectivity Assist, and it is far more willing to use cellular data when Wi-Fi is weak. I don’t have to manually turn Wi-Fi off to force my phone to use cellular, and the end result is that you are almost not aware at all that you have weak Wi-Fi. It works even better than having a mesh Wi-Fi network.

If the problem of weak Wi-Fi bugs you and you are curious about Siri AI, it’s worth giving the public beta a shot.

How to install the iOS 27 public beta

Back up your device before installing any beta software.

Photo: HWZ

To install the iOS 27 public beta, you need to be a member of the Apple Beta Software Program.
