No matter how much you love Animal Crossing and any of its variants, the critters get too familiar after a while, or maybe the routine starts to feel like a trap you can’t break out of. You need a change, in other words. The rise of the cozy genre \u2014 and Animal Crossing: New Horizons<\/em>‘ outrageous success \u2014 means there’s no shortage of games like Animal Crossing to choose from. These are seven of the best, perfect for laid-back life-simmers, farming enthusiasts, decorators, or any combination thereof. They’re all available on Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 as well. No PC required.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Stardew Valley<\/em> is the standard-bearer for laid-back agricultural life-sims and for good reason. It’s got everything \u2014 socializing and romance, decorating, farming (of course), adventuring, fairly extensive customization, cooking, the whole lot. If farm-fresh cozy is your preferred flavor of the genre, and you’ve already given Stardew<\/em> a go, there’s a whole lot more out there.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Hello Kitty and the Sanrio gang set up an idyllic little town on a faraway island in Hello Kitty: Island Adventure<\/em>, and it’s your job to make sure everyone’s happy. That sounds like a big task, but since Kitty and the rest are pretty much always happy, your job is more “being part of their daily lives and making them even happier just by existing.” Your to-do list includes things like decorating houses, running a cafe, doing errands for neighbors, finding treasure underwater, exploring a volcano, and basically whatever you want. It’s soft and adorable with a strong sense of cute humor, and the Sanrio aesthetic is a perfect fit.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Dreamlight Valley<\/em> is about as close as you can get to Animal Crossing without violating copyright. You, a Disney-loving human, move to a run-down valley and help rebuild it alongside Mickey Mouse, Goofy, and the rest. Scrooge McDuck expands his store a la Tom Nook. You can make your house bigger and stuff it full of eclectic furniture, but developer Gameloft did more than just emulate a style. There’s a surprisingly touching story about nostalgia and complicated relationships with the past that ties in wonderfully with the classic Disney emphasis, and since every included Disney character has their own world-appropriate spot to live, you get dozens of distinct climate and landscape types to decorate. There’s the usual free-to-play stuff to deal with (paid cosmetics, seasonal “battle pass” type things, and all that) but you can get through the entire game without spending a penny unless you just want to.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n In Haven Park<\/em>, you, a bird, take charge of a lovely little mountainside campsite after your bird-granny gets too old to handle it. The site is a bit run-down, so your biggest task is making it attractive to potential visitors. They all have their preferences you need to keep in mind while designing, but there’s still a great deal of freedom and flexibility in how you design your demesne. When you’re not decorating, you can spend some time exploring the nearby forest and digging up its mysteries \u2014 and treasure. Haven Park<\/em> has a lot going for it, including the fact that you don’t have to feel guilty if you don’t check in every day. Do all of it \u2014 or even just some of it \u2014 at your own pace.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Winter Burrow<\/em> is a bit more hardcore than your usual Animal Crossing-like, in that it has some survival elements, but it’s no less cozy for it. A small mouse shoulders the herculean task of restoring their forest home to its former glory. It’s not glorious now. It’s a mess, unfit for others to live in, exposed to the elements \u2014 and predatory animals. All your scavenging, crafting, and decorating goes toward filling the village with life again, and it feels immensely rewarding. Developer Pine Creek Games adopted a hand-drawn style for Winter Burrow<\/em>‘s visual direction, so if you’ve ever wanted a game that looked like Jill Barklem’s classic Brambly Hedge series, this is the one for you.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n ooblets<\/p>\n Ooblets<\/em> is equal parts Animal Crossing, Stardew Valley<\/em>, and Pokemon. You set up a new life in a rundown shack on the edge of an odd little coastal town. Odd, in the sense that there’s a bunch of weird little goo guys (they aren’t guys) oozing around all over the place. They’re nice, though, and they want to be your friend. The ooblets help out around the farm you end up starting as thanks for helping them, or they just join in dance parties with you. Whatever you want, really. Ooblets<\/em> has a vibe unmatched by other cozy life-sims, and it’s absolutely massive, too.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n If your tastes have a slightly more macabre bent, Graveyard Keeper<\/em> is worth your attention for sure. It swaps farm care for graveyard maintenance as you craft, fish, decorate, and build your way to becoming the top grave-keeper in the village. I mean, you’re the only one in the village, but still. There’s a good deal of flexibility, where you can be ethical and help people out or cut corners and save money regardless of the harm it does. It does lean more toward the sim-management side of things, but it’s still cozy and darkly charming.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Palia<\/em> takes the Animal Crossing formula to fantasy lands and gives it a slight MMO-style twist. You wake up one day in a weird land with magic and robots in equal measure and have no idea how you got there or what’s going on. So you do the most natural thing ever: avoid looking for answers and build a house. The answers come, eventually, but meanwhile, you’ve got quests to do, a vast, gorgeous world to explore, gardens to tend, meals to make, furniture to arrange, and all the good stuff. It’s the closest an MMO has come to making the promise of “do daily life in video games” work and<\/em> be fun, though you can do all of this by yourself if you want. Palia<\/em> is wonderfully laid-back. There’s a truckload of things to do, but it’s all there for whenever you want to do it \u2014 or not! You’re completely free to do whatever takes your fancy whenever it does, even if it’s just riding your horse along the shore at sunset every day.<\/p>\n\n 1 <\/span>
