Alongside its new smartphones, Google has also unveiled the Pixel Watch 5. At a glance, it may look like it hasn\u2019t changed much from its predecessor but this is not quite another small annual refresh. Instead, Google has stuffed more Gemini features into the watch, improved its GPS tracking and introduced several health features that are seemingly more ambitious than previous models.<\/p>\n
A big part of this is making the watch more useful without forcing you to stop and search for something yourself. At a Glance<\/b> can now place information on the watch face when Google thinks you may need it, such as bringing up a boarding pass when you reach the airport or showing how many stops are left during your commute. Raise to Talk<\/b> has also been improved, so you can lift your wrist and ask Gemini to start a workout or find a dinner reservation that has been buried in Gmail. Google says common actions are now processed directly on the watch with less delay and can even work offline.<\/p>\n
Gemini Intelligence Proactive Suggestions<\/b> takes this idea a little further. If someone asks when the next family dinner is, the watch can search your calendar and surface the relevant event without making you dig through your phone. You can then use a double-pinch gesture to select, confirm or send a response. Whether you will want Gemini deciding what should appear on your wrist throughout the day is another matter, but it is a more interesting use of smartwatch AI than simply shrinking a chatbot down to a smaller screen.<\/p>\n
Powering all of these features is Qualcomm\u2019s Snapdragon W5 Gen 2 Accelerated<\/b> processor and Google is claiming the watch is 20% faster overall \u2013 let\u2019s see if we can notice that with our eyes when we get our review unit.<\/p>\n
Fitness buffs will be happy to hear there are more fitness features on the way too. A new strength-training experience will guide them through sets and rest periods from the wrist, while allowing weights and repetitions to be recorded during a workout. Google Health Coach<\/b> can also put together strength routines based on your goals and recommend changing a planned workout using recovery information such as sleep and heart-rate variability. However, some of these coaching features are locked behind a separate Google Health Premium<\/b> paywall subscription.<\/p>\n
But it is the new Health Guardian<\/b> feature that got me curious the most. The Pixel Watch 5 can monitor for signs of a breathing emergency and, if the wearer does not respond, contact emergency services and share their location. It uses several sensors and on-device AI to look for a severe and sustained decline in oxygen saturation. But the feature will only be available in selected European countries for the time being.<\/p>\n
Hardware wise, the Pixel Watch 5 comes in 41mm<\/b> and 45mm<\/b> sizes and retains Google\u2019s rounded Actua 360 display<\/b>, now capable of reaching 3,000 nits<\/b>. There are new watch faces, generative watch-face options and additional colours too, while Google says battery life remains rated at up to 30 hours for the 41mm watch and 40 hours for the 45mm model.<\/p>\nAvailability and pricing<\/h2>\n
The Pixel Watch 5 starts at S$569 for the 41mm<\/b> and S$599 for the 45mm<\/b> models. They come in Obsidian, Fog, Olive and Canyon (41mm only) colours. Pre-orders are now opened, with the watch going on sale from Aug 20 at Google Store, Singtel, Starhub, Shopee, Lazada, Harvey Norman, Best Denki, Courts and Metapod.
