Workers\u2019 Party (WP) chief Pritam Singh, a non-practising lawyer, was struck off the rolls on Aug 13 over <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/courts-crime\/pritam-singh-loses-appeal-against-conviction-key-points-from-the-case?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"inline font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"typography-test-id\">his criminal conviction for lying to a parliamentary committee<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Both the Law Society of Singapore and Singh agreed that the high threshold to avoid a striking-off in his case was not met.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The striking-off was handed down by the Court of Three Judges, the highest disciplinary body for the legal profession, which has the power to suspend errant lawyers or strike them off the rolls.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The panel comprised Chief Justice Sundaresh Menon, Justice Kannan Ramesh and Justice See Kee Oon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Singh, who is an MP for Aljunied GRC, was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/courts-crime\/pritam-singh-found-guilty-five-key-points-from-the-verdict?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"inline font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"typography-test-id\">convicted by a district judge in February 2025<\/span><\/a> on two counts of lying under oath to the Committee of Privileges.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Pritam Singh struck off rolls over conviction for lying to parliamentary committee\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/I8MouJMprTM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">This was related to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/politics\/wp-mp-raeesah-khan-referred-to-parliament-privileges-committee-for-lying-about?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"inline font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"typography-test-id\">former WP MP Raeesah Khan\u2019s lie in Parliament in 2021<\/span><\/a> about details of a sexual assault case that\u00a0she alleged was mishandled by the police <!-- -->in Singapore<!-- -->.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">In December 2025, Singh\u00a0lost his appeal to the High Court against his conviction and paid his $14,000 fine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">On March 4, 2026, the society started disciplinary proceedings\u00a0against\u00a0Singh in compliance with the Legal Profession Act.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">This was based on information received from the Attorney-General\u2019s Chambers that Singh had been convicted of offences involving \u201cfraud or dishonesty\u201d, a Law Society spokesperson had earlier told The Straits Times.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Under the Act, when a regulated legal practitioner has been convicted of an offence involving fraud and dishonesty, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/courts-crime\/law-society-says-it-was-required-by-law-to-initiate-disciplinary-proceedings-against-pritam-singh?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"inline font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"typography-test-id\">Law Society is required to apply to the court<\/span><\/a> for disciplinary action to be taken.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">On Aug 13, the society, represented by Senior Counsel Cavinder Bull, said that based on precedent, Singh should be struck off.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Bull noted that the law is clear that misconduct involving dishonesty will almost inevitably lead to an order for striking off, unless there are truly exceptional circumstances.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">In present case there are no exceptional circumstances that mitigate against the striking off, he said, adding that Singh should be treated the same as other lawyers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Bull said Singh\u2019s public service as an MP\u00a0did not amount to exceptional circumstances.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">He said Singh\u2019s prominence in the public sphere aggravates, rather than detract from, the negative impact of his conduct.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Singh\u2019s lawyer, Senior Counsel Chelva Rajah, accepted that the legal threshold to avoid a striking off is not met.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">He conceded that dishonesty was an essential element of the offence that Singh had been convicted of.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">This is a developing story.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<center><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/pritam-singh-struck-off-rolls-over-conviction-for-lying-to-parliamentary-committee\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Read Full Article At Source <\/a><br \/>\n<center\/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>SINGAPORE &#8211;
