A group of people have drawn criticism online for setting up a badminton net across a public walkway at Sembawang Park, obstructing pedestrians using the path.<\/p>\n
In a photo shared on Facebook on Sunday (Aug 9), five people in red shirts are seen gathered along the walkway, with the net having a Singapore flag on display.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Several folding chairs and badminton bags could also be seen around the setup.<\/p>\n
An eyewitness claimed the incident took place on the morning of National Day, and there were about 10 people involved.<\/span><\/p>\n The incident garnered mixed reactions online, with some netizens criticising the group’s actions while others argued that pedestrians could opt for alternative routes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n One commenter said that celebrating National Day with friends and enjoying a game of badminton was perfectly reasonable, but public spaces should remain accessible to everyone.<\/p>\n “A walkway is meant for people to pass through, so setting up a net across it without considering pedestrians is understandably frustrating,” said one Facebook user.\u00a0<\/p>\n Others took a more relaxed view of the incident, noting that the park is a shared space.\u00a0<\/p>\n “I think you must have been there the first time. There are a few routes \u2014 why can’t you simply walk around them?” the commenter wrote.<\/p>\n Some netizens also questioned the display of the state flag on the badminton net, with one describing it as inappropriate.\u00a0<\/p>\n “Unauthorised display of the national flag and blockage of walkway.
