For Chee Keong Cheung, a cinematic education came not from the local cinemas of his native Lancaster in England\u2019s northwest, but from the neon-lit streets of Hong Kong.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was probably a bit young to be watching them, but the John Woo<\/span> films were a big inspiration. The Killer<\/em><\/span>, A Better Tomorrow<\/em><\/span> \u2026 had a real effect on me,\u201d he tells the South China Morning Post over a video call.<\/div>\n
Films from the so-called \u201cHeroic Bloodshed\u201d era of Hong Kong action cinema, of which Woo was a key figure, lit a fire in Cheung. The filmmaker often dresses in a black suit, white shirt and tie, just like one of Woo\u2019s assassins. He remains a fan of the director and film star Chow Yun-fat<\/span>.<\/div>\n

\u201cWhat I was really drawn to was just the style and how cool these films were, but also \u2026 this level of nobility. There\u2019s this code that these characters live by \u2026 and they are also characters at a crossroads. It wasn\u2019t just action, action, action. With my background, being British-Chinese and growing up in the UK, seeing the two perspectives \u2026 that shaped my thought process.\u201d<\/p>\n

In his youth, Cheung roped in his friends to make short films \u2013 thrillers, heist films \u2013 often using his parents\u2019 restaurant as a location.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs a child, I tried but I didn\u2019t necessarily get the best grades,\u201d he says. \u201cI was not top [of] my class. With film, it was a creative outlet.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
