Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) officers cut open the floorboard of a Malaysia-registered car during an enhanced check at Woodlands Checkpoint on Aug 4.<\/p>\n
In photographs posted on its Facebook on Tuesday (Aug 11), the multi-purpose vehicle’s (MPV) floorboard was seen cut open from its underneath, revealing cartons of cigarettes.<\/p>\n
Several cartons of duty-unpaid cigarettes were similarly found under the MPV’s bonnet.\u00a0<\/p>\n
ICA said its officers had directed the vehicle for enhanced checks, acting on information received from its Integrated Targeting Centre.<\/p>\n
There, search and examination officers found more than 600 cartons and over 900 packets of duty-unpaid cigarettes concealed in the floorboard of the vehicle.<\/p>\n

In this instance, a 26-year-old male Malaysian driver was arrested in relation to the case.<\/p>\n
The seized contraband cigarettes and the man have been referred to the Singapore Customs for further investigations.<\/p>\n
Buying, selling, conveying, possessing or dealing with duty-unpaid goods are serious offences under the Customs Act and the Goods and Services Tax Act.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Offenders can be fined up to 40 times the amount of duty and GST evaded, jailed for up to six years, or both.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Vehicles used to commit such offences, as well as proceeds from the sale of duty-unpaid goods, may also be forfeited.<\/p>\n
