Analyst Tim Culpan warns that stocks of the upcoming iPhone 18 Pro and Apple\u2019s first foldable iPhone could be severely constrained<\/b> due to the global memory chip shortage.<\/p>\n
Word on the street is that Apple is struggling to secure enough memory chips for its upcoming flagship models. The supply crunch is reportedly so severe that TSMC has around US$1 billion worth of unpackaged processors sitting idle<\/b> while waiting for the necessary memory components.<\/p>\n
The memory shortage has been building for months as chipmakers divert production capacity towards high-demand AI infrastructure and data centres. The resulting supply squeeze has pushed memory prices sharply higher and forced consumer electronics manufacturers to reconsider their product configurations and pricing.<\/p>\n
Apple has already raised prices for the Mac, iPad, and other products<\/b>, citing the unprecedented increase in memory costs as grounds for the price hikes. The company has also reduced the number of configuration options available for the Mac Studio and Mac mini.<\/p>\n
The supply situation could make the iPhone 18 Pro and foldable iPhone particularly difficult to get at launch. And even if you could find one, the price would likely be considerable.<\/p>\n
The iPhone 18 Pro models are reportedly expected to cost US$250 to US$300 more<\/b> than their predecessors, potentially pushing the starting price of the Pro models well above S$2,000 in Singapore. Apple\u2019s first foldable iPhone is expected to be even more expensive, with earlier reports suggesting a starting price of more than S$3,000<\/b>.<\/p>\n
Between higher prices and potentially limited availability, Apple\u2019s biggest iPhone launch in years could leave consumers facing an unpleasant choice: pay more, wait longer, or both<\/b>.<\/p>\n
