{"id":75322,"date":"2026-08-10T06:00:11","date_gmt":"2026-08-09T22:00:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=75322"},"modified":"2026-08-10T06:00:11","modified_gmt":"2026-08-09T22:00:11","slug":"utah-courts-singapore-investors-for-critical-minerals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=75322","title":{"rendered":"Utah courts Singapore investors for critical minerals"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">SALT LAKE CITY, Utah \u2013 Home to mountains, deserts and the largest saltwater lake in the western hemisphere, the US state of Utah has increasingly attracted foreign investment, but flows from Asia account for only a sliver of the pie.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Outreach to the region has helped, said Utah Governor Spencer Cox, pointing to the landlocked state\u2019s trade missions to Japan and South Korea, and the launch of a direct flight from its capital of Salt Lake City to Seoul in June 2025.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cWe did a trade mission to Japan and Korea almost two years ago and had tremendous success with bringing Utah companies to invest in Asia and vice versa,\u201d Cox said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cWith our Asian friends, it really started in tourism because they started visiting. We had that link to Asia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cWhere we are seeing investment right now is in life sciences, aerospace, defence and energy. Those sectors have been a real positive for us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">It comes as Utah\u2019s trove of critical minerals, with applications ranging from defence to artificial intelligence, has drawn attention.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The state\u2019s reserves of critical minerals are one of the most diverse in the US, and lawmakers earlier in 20<!-- -->26 <!-- -->established a long-term drive to meet 20 per cent to 25 per cent of domestic demand.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Cox had a pitch for Singapore investors who have typically favoured other American states, such as Texas. \u201cWe\u2019re the Texas of the Mountain West. They are among over 250 Singapore firms present across 45 states in the US, in sectors including logistics, real estate and professional services.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Enterprise Singapore (EnterpriseSG), which helps businesses expand overseas, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/business\/companies-markets\/enterprisesg-opens-new-austin-office-to-help-spore-companies-expand-in-the-us?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"inline font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"typography-test-id\">opened a US office in Texas earlier in 20<\/span><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/business\/companies-markets\/enterprisesg-opens-new-austin-office-to-help-spore-companies-expand-in-the-us?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"inline font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"typography-test-id\">26<\/span><\/a> to work alongside its offices in New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Its director for the Americas Lim Seow Hui told ST that it continues to see \u201csteady interest from Singapore companies looking to establish and deepen their in-market presence in the US\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">She added: \u201cOpportunities are increasingly emerging beyond traditional gateways such as New York and San Francisco.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"font-primary-headline-md-semibold\" data-testid=\"article-subhead-test-id\">Foreign investment push<\/h2>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Foreign direct investment (FDI) in the US has grown by more than a trillion US dollars since 2020 to US$5.86 trillion (S$7.5 trillion) in 2025, according to the US Bureau of Economic Analysis.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The manufacturing industry saw the largest increase in FDI, led by companies producing electrical equipment and components.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Jonathan Samford, president of Global Business Alliance, which supports foreign investors, said US President Donald Trump has been clear about wanting more investment on US soil.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cThe welcome extends well beyond Washington. In our latest national survey, 75 per cent of American voters viewed international companies favourably, up from 62 per cent two years ago, and that support runs across both parties,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">A recent report by fDi Intelligence, a subsidiary of the Financial Times, found that Texas, New York and California secured more FDI projects than other US states did, based on deal announcements made from 2020 to 2025.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Utah drew US$4.9 billion in FDI and was placed 32nd in terms of FDI capital expenditure over the period. It recorded US$40.3 billion in investments from other parts of the US.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Still, the report noted: \u201cThe state attracted its second-highest capital expenditure pledges in 2025 since records began.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cJapanese investors have been the most active, thanks to Sekisui House\u2019s multiple residential projects. This reflects strong inward migration of new residents from other parts of the US since the Covid-19 pandemic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The other top foreign investors in Utah were the United Kingdom, France, Canada and Australia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">There was no indication of the investment that can be attributed to Singapore, although industry sources said the Asian region accounts for a minority of investors in Utah.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"font-primary-headline-md-semibold\" data-testid=\"article-subhead-test-id\">Growing critical industries<\/h2>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Rio Tinto, one of the largest foreign companies operating in Utah, produces the critical minerals of copper and tellurium at its massive Kennecott mine near the capital.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Copper is essential for building data centres, power grid infrastructure and electric vehicles, while tellurium, recovered as a by-product of copper refining, is critical in the production of advanced thin-film solar panels.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">A spokesperson for the British-Australian firm said the open-pit mine is \u201cstrategically important not only for Rio Tinto, but (also) for the United States\u2019 broader efforts to build secure domestic supply chains\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cKennecott hosts a world-class copper orebody, a skilled local workforce, strong industrial infrastructure, and a community that understands the importance of responsible mining,\u201d the spokesperson added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The firm is exploring an expansion of its mine, which will produce some 1.5 million additional tonnes of copper.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"default inline-media-wrapper\" data-testid=\"inline-media-test-id\">\n<div class=\"flex flex-col items-start relative w-fit\"><picture><source media=\"(max-width: 480px)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cassette.sphdigital.com.sg\/image\/straitstimes\/6526579b5ed1e4b4060d57422a575f3bba29c8954a466cc515aaf5b1410f3d36?w=480\"\/><source media=\"(min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 720px)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cassette.sphdigital.com.sg\/image\/straitstimes\/6526579b5ed1e4b4060d57422a575f3bba29c8954a466cc515aaf5b1410f3d36?w=720\"\/><source media=\"(min-width: 721px and max-width: 3999px)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cassette.sphdigital.com.sg\/image\/straitstimes\/6526579b5ed1e4b4060d57422a575f3bba29c8954a466cc515aaf5b1410f3d36?w=900\"\/><source media=\"(min-width: 4000px)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cassette.sphdigital.com.sg\/image\/straitstimes\/6526579b5ed1e4b4060d57422a575f3bba29c8954a466cc515aaf5b1410f3d36\"\/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cassette.sphdigital.com.sg\/image\/straitstimes\/6526579b5ed1e4b4060d57422a575f3bba29c8954a466cc515aaf5b1410f3d36\" alt=\"Rio Tinto is considering an expansion of its Kennecott mine located just outside Salt Lake City in Utah.\" class=\"aspect-default flex items-start shrink-0 object-cover default article-default mobile:w-auto tablet:w-auto\" data-testid=\"image-test-id\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/picture><\/div><figcaption class=\"mobile:mx-16 tablet:mx-00 pt-08 pb-16\">\n<p class=\"inline text-secondary font-secondary-captions-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"inline-media-caption-test-id\">Rio Tinto is considering an expansion of its Kennecott mine located just outside Salt Lake City in Utah.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inline text-tertiary font-secondary-captions-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"inline-media-credit-test-id\"> <!-- -->ST PHOTO: ANNABELLE LIANG<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Brian Somers, president of the Utah Mining Association, said it is working with existing mining facilities, including Kennecott, to step up critical mineral production, instead of spending years developing new operations in the state.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cWe can\u2019t do things the way we\u2019ve done in the past. Unfortunately, China really does have us over a barrel with a lot of these mineral supply chains, so we\u2019ve got to accelerate the time to market,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Austrian manufacturer Doppelmayr <!-- -->is<!-- --> set to nearly double the size of its Utah production facility in September as part of a US$60 million expansion in the state.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The company builds ropeway systems deployed around the world, including the Singapore Cable Car\u2019s Sentosa line.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Doppelmayr USA chief executive Keith Johns said the firm benefited from more people venturing outdoors in the US and around the world after the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Even so, demand for the firm\u2019s products has been affected by tariffs imposed by the Trump administration. It sources components such as haul ropes \u2013 steel cables used to move chair lifts and cabins up and down mountains \u2013 from outside the US as it cannot find local manufacturers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Johns said: \u201cTariffs that are imposed on those. The number of 25- to 64-year-olds in Utah jumped by 10.8 per cent between April 1, 2020 and July 1, 2025.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Over the years, officials have also made progress in shedding Utah\u2019s reputation as a \u201cflyover state\u201d, a term often used to describe territories passed over by travellers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Its ski resorts, drawing swathes of visitors during winter, transform into popular mountain biking trails and concert venues in the summer months.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Cox\u2019s administration in May also launched a \u201cUtah Elevated\u201d plan to drive economic development through 2035, which includes targeting foreign and domestic investments.
