{"id":75025,"date":"2026-08-09T02:30:50","date_gmt":"2026-08-08T18:30:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=75025"},"modified":"2026-08-09T02:30:50","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T18:30:50","slug":"sporean-woman-lives-to-age-110-before-passing-peacefully-great-granddaughter-honours-her-resilience","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=75025","title":{"rendered":"S&#8217;porean woman lives to age 110 before passing peacefully, great-granddaughter honours her resilience"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<h2>MS Features: The Singaporean woman who lived to 110 years old<\/h2>\n<p>Not everyone goes through personal difficulties, lives through historical events, and comes out of them with enough kindness to touch the lives of generations of their family and community.<\/p>\n<p>However, Chiang Ah Swang, a Singaporean woman who lived to the age of 110, is an outlier.<\/p>\n<p>Despite being given away to an adoptive family, having her marriage arranged as a child, and experiencing the Japanese occupation, she lived a full life surrounded by family members and neighbours who loved her.<\/p>\n<p>Mdm Chiang\u2019s life story came to light after her great-granddaughter Cheryl Ong reached out to<em> MS News<\/em> on 31 July following her passing that morning.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had always hoped to share her story while she was still alive. I kept thinking there would always be another birthday to do so,\u201d said Ms Ong, speaking about her beloved Ah Chor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter she passed away, I realised this was my last opportunity to honour her life and preserve her story.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Adopted and brought to Singapore<\/h3>\n<p>Mdm Chiang was born in Tong\u2019an, Fujian, China in 1916.<\/p>\n<p>As if foreshadowing the challenging life she would face, her mother died when she was born.<\/p>\n<p>Unable to raise both her and her sister due to poverty, Mdm Chiang\u2019s father gave her to a wealthy woman named Tan Bian, who then passed the baby to her daughter-in-law, Hong Ye, to raise.<\/p>\n<p>At around 1918, her adoptive family brought young Mdm Chiang to Singapore as a toddler.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t<iframe id=\"answers-client-6a7770666e1ca\" class=\"answers-client\" src=\"\" height=\"500\" loading=\"lazy\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>However,\u00a0they returned to China when she was about nine years old.<\/p>\n<p>When she was 19 years old, Mdm Chiang made her way back to Singapore where she lived\u00a0permanently since.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_752166\" style=\"width: 491px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-752166\" class=\"size-full wp-image-752166 lazyload\" src=\"https:\/\/mustsharenews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Singaporean-woman-110.png\" alt=\"Singaporean woman 110\" width=\"481\" height=\"706\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mustsharenews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Singaporean-woman-110.png 481w, https:\/\/mustsharenews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Singaporean-woman-110-409x600.png 409w, https:\/\/mustsharenews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Singaporean-woman-110-102x150.png 102w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 481px) 100vw, 481px\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 481px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 1277\/876;\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-752149\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Image courtesy of Ms Ong.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h3>Lived through the Japanese occupation of Singapore<\/h3>\n<p>When the Japanese occupation of Singapore happened, Mdm Chiang had to brave the unrest\u00a0with two young children.<\/p>\n<p>At the time, her daughter was only three years old while her son was still a baby.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe often recounted hiding in drains and feeding her children peanuts to keep them quiet so they wouldn\u2019t be discovered,\u201d Ms Ong told <em>MS News<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe also told us that the family made their own underground shelter to hide in by digging into the soil and covering the top with leaves.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Besides her fond childhood memories of her adoptive family\u2019s hotel in China, memories of the war had seemingly been forged in her mind, as she would remember them even when her dementia had set in.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere were occasionally moments where she would point into the distance and tell us there was a fire or that we needed to leave immediately,\u201d said Ms Ong.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt times, she would also say there were \u201cso many people\u201d or \u201cso many children\u201d around, almost as if she were reliving a chaotic scene.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Remained resilient despite life\u2019s challenges<\/h3>\n<p>Ms Ong also shared that her great-grandmother worked several jobs in her lifetime.<\/p>\n<p>One of them was in a factory, where she unfortunately encountered an accident that injured her eyes and left her partially blind.<\/p>\n<p>Despite this, the woman remained steadfast.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was afraid of losing her job, so she didn\u2019t report the injury and continued working,\u201d Ms Ong shared.<\/p>\n<p>Mdm Chiang later spent 23 years working in a school canteen before retiring at the age of 68.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_752154\" style=\"width: 706px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-752154\" class=\"size-full wp-image-752154 lazyload\" src=\"https:\/\/mustsharenews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/singaporean-woman-110-6.png\" alt=\"singaporean woman 110 (6)\" width=\"696\" height=\"1012\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mustsharenews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/singaporean-woman-110-6.png 696w, https:\/\/mustsharenews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/singaporean-woman-110-6-413x600.png 413w, https:\/\/mustsharenews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/singaporean-woman-110-6-103x150.png 103w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 696px) 100vw, 696px\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 696px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 696\/1012;\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-752154\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Image courtesy of Ms Ong.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Perhaps what helped Mdm Chiang endure life\u2019s challenges was her ability to enjoy life\u2019s simple routines.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Ong shared that well into her 90s, her Ah Chor would have a glass of cognac mixed with hot water every evening after dinner.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy aunt always jokes that perhaps the cognac was the secret to her strength and longevity,\u201d said Ms Ong.<\/p>\n<p>Mdm Chiang also loved playing\u00a0Four Colour Cards, a traditional Chinese card game that\u2019s becoming increasingly rare today, with her family and neighbours.<\/p>\n<h3>Great-grandmother welcomed people into her home<\/h3>\n<p>Despite going through many hardships, her family remembers Mdm Chiang as a family-oriented woman who was kind, outgoing, and welcomed neighbours into her home.<\/p>\n<p>After the government redeveloped the Hong Lim area in 1969, she moved into a\u00a0small two-room flat in Redhill and lived there from then on.<\/p>\n<p>The flat witnessed the family grow. She said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>To everyone else, she may have been someone who lived to 110.
