{"id":73835,"date":"2026-08-03T10:50:04","date_gmt":"2026-08-03T02:50:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=73835"},"modified":"2026-08-03T10:50:04","modified_gmt":"2026-08-03T02:50:04","slug":"university-of-the-arts-singapores-first-graduates","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=73835","title":{"rendered":"University of the Arts Singapore&#8217;s first graduates"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">SINGAPORE \u2013 <!-- -->With the graduation of the pioneer cohort from Singapore\u2019s first arts university on Aug 7, a new generation of multidisciplinary artists will enter the<!-- --> <!-- -->workforce.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">A total of 135 students will graduate from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/university-of-the-arts-singapore-partners-with-arts-house-limited-to-offer-students-work-experience?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"inline font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"typography-test-id\">University of the Arts Singapore (UAS)<\/span><\/a>, formed by an alliance between Lasalle College of the Arts and the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA).<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">To <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/parenting-education\/askst-what-do-you-need-to-apply-for-the-new-university-of-the-arts-what-are-the-career-prospects?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"inline font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"typography-test-id\">beef up arts education in Singapore, UAS launched with 29 programmes<\/span><\/a>, including degrees in areas such as art histories and curatorial practices, biophilic design and design for social futures, as well as Master of Arts degrees in arts and ecology, fine art and music therapy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">A UAS spokesperson says these programmes reflect evolving areas and wider societal interests, including in sustainability, health and well-being, and interdisciplinary arts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The new programmes attracted strong interest. For example, the <!-- -->master\u2019s<!-- --> in music therapy was oversubscribed well before its closing date.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Cassandra Chng, 31, studied music and audio technology when she was in polytechnic. She wanted to further her studies in music therapy but could not find such a course locally. She went on to do a degree in computer science but returned to her passion and found work as a pre-school music teacher.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">She leapt at the opportunity to do <!-- -->a master\u2019s degree<!-- --> in music therapy when UAS opened.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cMusic is culturally unique. When I looked at overseas courses, I felt it would not work. If I want to practise in Singapore, I should be trained in Singapore,\u201d says Chng. They also suggested moving the TV monitors towards the window, so patients could view both the TV display and garden, among other suggestions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Her team was awarded the winning proposal by NCCS for best addressing the objectives, operational considerations and needs of various stakeholders.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Ariana says she gained confidence in presenting and justifying her designs through her course.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cDoing projects with clients gave me insights to how a real-life project would be like, for example, getting feedback and adjusting our proposal,\u201d says Ariana.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"font-primary-headline-md-semibold\" data-testid=\"article-subhead-test-id\">Looking ahead<\/h2>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Since its launch, UAS has continued to expand its offerings.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">In 2025, Lasalle introduced the <!-- -->Bachelor of Arts (Honours)<!-- --> Music Business programme, the first dedicated music business degree in Singapore.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">NAFA also announced the <!-- -->Bachelor of Music (Honours)<!-- -->, jointly awarded by UAS and the Royal College of Music, London, with the first intake planned for August<!-- --> 2026<!-- -->.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The programme combines conservatoire training with Asian and intercultural musical practices.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">UAS will also expand its postgraduate offerings, including NAFA\u2019s Master of Performance and Lasalle\u2019s <!-- -->Master of Arts<!-- --> in cultural analytics and artificial intelligence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Here is a closer look at the journeys taken by two UAS graduates.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"font-primary-headline-md-semibold\" data-testid=\"article-subhead-test-id\">Turning a passion for Chinese theatre into a career<\/h2>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">In Secondary 3, Zhuang Chuhang discovered a passion for Chinese theatre through the Chinese drama co-curricular activity at Hwa Chong Institution and wanted to pursue it, rather than continue with his studies.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"landscape inline-media-wrapper\" data-testid=\"inline-media-test-id\">\n<div class=\"flex flex-col items-start relative w-fit\"><picture><source media=\"(max-width: 480px)\" font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">His parents, however, worried about the stability and financial viability of a career in the arts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Eventually, they reached a compromise: He<!-- --> <!-- -->would complete his A-level exams before making any decisions about his future.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Although he was eligible to apply for a degree programme at a local university, he did not do so.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">After his national service, he decided to do a diploma in theatre (Mandarin drama) at NAFA, as he wanted to hone his craft.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cI was not ready to leave Singapore and there were not many options for learning about Chinese theatre locally then. I also wanted a stronger foundation because all I had was the drama club experience,\u201d says Zhuang, now 28.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The older of two boys came from China to start Primary 1 when he was nine, joining his parents who were already working here. His 18-year-old brother is currently doing a diploma in chemical engineering.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">When UAS announced a BA (Honours) in contemporary Chinese theatres, Zhuang, in his final year of his diploma course, saw it as the natural next step.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The course explores Chinese theatre within Singapore\u2019s landscape, with students studying both traditional arts like taiji<!-- --> <!-- -->and Chinese opera, as well as skills like playwriting and directing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cI wanted to understand the local theatre scene, what society wants and how Chinese theatre is evolving,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">His diploma results \u2013 including multiple appearances on the dean\u2019s list and a<!-- --> <!-- -->NAFA scholarship \u2013 culminated in him being awarded the National Arts Council-UAS Arts Scholarship for his degree.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">This proved to be a turning point for his parents, a construction site manager and a<!-- --> <!-- -->coffee shop worker. Seeing their son honoured for his dedication helped shift their perspective on his career choice.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cWhen they attended the award ceremony, they finally realised I was doing well,\u201d he says, recalling their supportive smiles.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Zhuang has been active in the local theatre scene.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">In May, he played the lead role in Toy Factory Productions\u2019 Master White Dragon and has upcoming projects with the Singapore Hokkien Huay Kuan and Drama Box.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">He has been offered a full-time position with a local theatre company and is in the midst of discussions with it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Reflecting on his journey, Zhuang says that his degree provided more than just a specific set of skills.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cThe biggest gain hasn\u2019t just been knowledge; it\u2019s a change in how I think. I used to see myself solely as a performer. Now, I see myself also as a creator and an artist. That shift has opened many more possibilities for my future,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"font-primary-headline-md-semibold\" data-testid=\"article-subhead-test-id\">From graphic designer to designing for social impact<\/h2>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">After graduating with a media, arts and design diploma from Singapore Polytechnic in 2021, Tiew Fang Kee worked in graphic design and marketing for several years, but struggled to find fulfilment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cI felt a disconnect between what I was doing and who I wanted to be,\u201d says the 25-year-old.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"landscape inline-media-wrapper\" data-testid=\"inline-media-test-id\">\n<div class=\"flex flex-col items-start relative w-fit\"><picture><source media=\"(max-width: 480px)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cassette.sphdigital.com.sg\/image\/straitstimes\/f66287aa71ae26dd951dab2b96a6db5849203a5dc8e4b86c6d4cf6600c6d7ea9?w=480\"\/><source media=\"(min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 720px)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cassette.sphdigital.com.sg\/image\/straitstimes\/f66287aa71ae26dd951dab2b96a6db5849203a5dc8e4b86c6d4cf6600c6d7ea9?w=720\"\/><source media=\"(min-width: 721px and max-width: 3999px)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cassette.sphdigital.com.sg\/image\/straitstimes\/f66287aa71ae26dd951dab2b96a6db5849203a5dc8e4b86c6d4cf6600c6d7ea9?w=900\"\/><source media=\"(min-width: 4000px)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cassette.sphdigital.com.sg\/image\/straitstimes\/f66287aa71ae26dd951dab2b96a6db5849203a5dc8e4b86c6d4cf6600c6d7ea9\"\/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cassette.sphdigital.com.sg\/image\/straitstimes\/f66287aa71ae26dd951dab2b96a6db5849203a5dc8e4b86c6d4cf6600c6d7ea9\" alt=\"Tiew Fang Kee, a multidisciplinary designer who undertook the BA (Hons) Design for Social Futures programme, photographed at Lasalle College of the Arts on July 15.\" class=\"aspect-landscape flex items-start shrink-0 object-cover landscape article-landscape mobile:w-auto tablet:w-auto\" data-testid=\"image-test-id\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/picture><\/div><figcaption class=\"mobile:mx-16 tablet:mx-00 pt-08 pb-16\">\n<p class=\"inline text-secondary font-secondary-captions-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"inline-media-caption-test-id\">Tiew Fang Kee graduates from the design for social futures programme with a degree.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inline text-tertiary font-secondary-captions-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"inline-media-credit-test-id\"> <!-- -->ST PHOTO: SHINTARO TAY<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Drawn by the prospect of finding solutions for societal issues like environmental sustainability and the challenges of an ageing population, Tiew joined UAS\u2019 design for social futures degree programme and found the curriculum both exciting and demanding.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The interdisciplinary programme, which spans areas such as service design, speculative design and systems design, allowed students to collaborate closely with faculty and experts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The small class of 19 students with different design backgrounds, including product design, communications and interior design, also provided a chance for them to learn from one another, Tiew says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The curriculum was further enriched by masterclasses.<!-- --> <!-- -->For instance, there was one by a medicine and design researcher who helped the students master complex data synthesis for their research projects.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">For her final-year project, Tiew spent time with senior communities over nine months, joining them in exercise programmes and communal dining.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Her research highlighted the role of \u201cconnectors\u201d, individuals who bridge social gaps and foster community longevity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cI wanted to map out and surface these bonds, as they are truly what sustain a community, far more than the programmes themselves,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">As she prepares to graduate, Tiew aims to enter the social or environmental sector.
