So you’ve hit end credits for Baldur’s Gate 3. <\/em>You’ve attended Withers’ party, you’re mourning your character, and you are, of course, immediately plotting your next run. It’s hard not to want to go through that experience again. Unfortunately, you can’t play Baldur’s Gate 3<\/em> for the first time twice. However, there are other games out there that can give you a similar thrill.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

If we’re looking for Baldur’s Gate 3<\/em> clones that truly deliver, let’s start by defining our terms. Baldur’s Gate 3 <\/em>is an isometric cRPG built on reactive storytelling, choices that shape your character and their world, companions worth getting attached to, and more than one way to solve your problems \u2014 including the option for combat. (That last point is, heartbreakingly, why this list doesn’t include Disco Elysium<\/em>.)<\/p>\n

To keep this list interesting, I’m also looking for games with high production value, a decent playtime, and very positive reviews. I also made the excruciating<\/em> decision to exclude prior games from Larian Studios \u2014 the makers of Baldur’s Gate 3<\/em> \u2014 as well as Baldur’s Gate 1<\/em> and 2<\/em>. These are all phenomenal games, especially Divinity: Original Sin 2<\/em>. If you haven’t already, drop everything and play it at once.<\/p>\n

In Wasteland 3<\/em>, you\u2019re forced into brutal gray areas where there\u2019s no good choice \u2014 and you\u2019re forced to live with the compromises you\u2019ll make. Starting as the only surviving members of a team of Desert Rangers, it\u2019s up to you to figure out how to survive and get supplies for your home base. You’ll do this in part by developing such skills as \u201cAnimal Whisperer,\u201d \u201cLockpicking,\u201d or\u2026 \u201cToaster Repair?\u201d How important is repairing toasters in post-apocalyptic Colorado? If building out your character at every level-up in Baldur\u2019s Gate 3<\/em> was what you lived for, take note! Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous<\/em> lets you decide between over 25 base classes, archetypes, and feats. Bad news: When you boot up this game, evil\u2019s already won. Good news: If you like playing as a bad guy with the ability to make an abundance of morally gray choices that are actually supported with fleshed-out in-game content, you\u2019ve found your game. Here, you\u2019re not choosing between the typical good and bad dialogue options: Instead, you\u2019re a cruel, efficient, or rebellious Fatebinder enforcing the laws of your already-successful evil overlord.<\/p>\n

Morrigan and Alistair are fighting over you (again); is it time to head back to camp and give one or both a gift so you can get a peaceful night\u2019s sleep? High school hallways, meet supernatural dungeon crawler. The art style here\u2019s very different from BG3, but the way you\u2019ll overthink every character interaction, build deep bonds (hopefully), and stress over strategy is not. By day, you\u2019ll navigate modern Tokyo as a student at Shujin Academy. By night, you lead a crew of teenage vigilantes \u2014 the Phantom Thieves of Hearts. Which job is scarier? Who\u2019s to say.<\/p>\n

Where to play:<\/strong> Some<\/em> Macs (not compatible with macOS systems using Intel processors), PC, Steam Deck<\/p>\n

In Baldur\u2019s Gate 3, you started with a ticking time clock because of your, ah, tadpole issue<\/em>. Here, your character, V, has a digital ghost, played by Keanu Reeves, who is slowly overwriting your mind. While this game has a first-person perspective instead of BG3\u2019s largely top-down view, it works \u2014 and the neon-drenched world is gorgeous to look at from any angle.<\/p>\n

As an honorable mention to close out this list, if you’re interested in older Dungeons and Dragons<\/em>-adjacent RPGs, there are many<\/em>\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b that are absolutely worth your time. (Psst! There’s even a convenient and often-discounted bundle of them on Steam, should you be so inclined.)<\/p>\n
