SINGAPORE \u2013 During the school holidays, 17-year-old Marissa Ong plans to try one of the new job tasters introduced under a new national plan to support young people in their careers and personal development<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n The junior college student hopes shadowing professionals at work will help her decide if she wants to pursue specific industries in the future. She also wants to hear their honest opinions about working in their industry and company.<\/p>\n Nanyang Polytechnic graduate Liao Er Qi, who completed a diploma in animation, games and visual effects in 2026, said the job tasters could be useful for someone like her who is still figuring out her long-term career path.<\/p>\n The 19-year-old freelance pottery assistant is considering a switch to the education sector and plans to apply to the National Institute of Education to become a teacher.<\/p>\n \u201c\u2060Since I\u2019m starting fresh, I don\u2019t really have any education connections or foundation.\u201d<\/p>\n Like Marissa and Liao, several youth said the moves under the recently unveiled SG Youth Plan are a good first step.<\/p>\n The five-year road map launched on July 25 aims to reach at least 500,000 young people aged between 15 and 35 through initiatives such as job tasters, mentoring opportunities, adulting programmes and a co-living scheme.<\/p>\n Up to 30,000 job taster opportunities lasting from half a day to a few weeks will be offered each year by 2030, giving young people first-hand exposure to different workplaces and industries. More than 10,000 such opportunities will be available in 2026.<\/p>\n The National Youth Council (NYC) offered about 11,000 job taster opportunities in 2025, with around 80 per cent taken up. Healthcare, finance and the arts were among the most popular sectors.<\/p>\n About 30 per cent of the opportunities took the form of career human libraries, where youth engage professionals in small-group conversations, and another 30 per cent were learning journeys.<\/p>\n Around 20 per cent were micro work experiences, with the remainder comprising project work, short-term work attachments and job shadowing.<\/p>\n Discover, a one-stop site for youth to sign up for the initiatives under the SG Youth Plan, was made available from July 25.<\/p>\n Some young Singaporeans say the initiatives offer them reassurance and resources at a time when many of them are worried about jobs and an uncertain future.<\/p>\n Others, however, questioned whether several programmes are geared mainly towards students and those just entering the workforce.<\/p>\n Recent National University of Singapore communications and new media graduate Latisha Sonia said the measures feel \u201cpromising\u201d.<\/p>\n \u201cThe Government is not just throwing us into the deep end with the current financial climate and economy that we are made to live in but rather, help us navigate that transition from commencement to first full-time job,\u201d said the 24-year-old who is looking for a job.<\/p>\n Clarence Ching, founder of social mobility charity Access Singapore, said job tasters are valuable because many youth make decisions with very limited exposure to the world of work.<\/p>\n \u201cFor youth from more privileged backgrounds, career insights often come naturally through family, social networks or personal connections,\u201d he said, but many disadvantaged youth do not have the same access.<\/p>\n Job tasters at a national level can equalise such opportunities, Ching said.<\/p>\n But exposure alone is not enough.<\/p>\n While a one-day or short-term experience can generate interest, he said it is insufficient for a young person to fully understand an industry or develop the confidence to take the next steps.<\/p>\n To maximise impact, job tasters must be paired with mentoring, career coaching, structured reflection, among other efforts, he added. \u201cThis allows youth to translate initial exposure into informed decisions and concrete opportunities.\u201d<\/p>\n Software engineer Tan Chew Yan, who is in the process of a mid-career switch after almost four years in her current software engineer role, said she found the personality quiz on the Discover portal particularly useful.<\/p>\n \u201cI even found out about jobs that I did not know existed before this,\u201d the 30-year-old said, citing a human factor scientist as one such occupation the platform recommended. She found it interesting to see how the algorithm could match people with careers based on their interests and aptitude.<\/p>\n She was also drawn to a job shadowing opportunity with the organisers of the Singapore Night Festival because of her interest in heritage and culture.<\/p>\n But Tan felt some of the other programmes may not be so accessible to those looking for a switch in careers as the initiatives offered seem to cater to those seeking an introduction to the workforce. She suggested the SG Youth Plan could better serve older youth by partnering organisations already offering specialised career programmes.<\/p>\n Final-year law student Varun Karthik, 25, shared similar reservations, adding that the job tasters would be helpful for those deciding what course or industry to join.
