SINGAPORE \u2013 More than 470 people addicted to vaping and etomidate have turned to the Institute of Mental Health (IMH) for help since September 2025.<\/p>\n
Many had tried to quit vaping on their own, but found it difficult.<\/p>\n
Some also lost their jobs because of their addiction.<\/p>\n
IMH said that from Sept 1, 2025, to May 31, 2026, 141 people enrolled in the QuitVape programme<\/span><\/a> at its National Addictions Management Service (NAMS) clinic.<\/p>\n The national rehabilitation programme is free for Singaporeans and permanent residents, and consists of four individual and two group counselling sessions.<\/p>\n The standardised programme helps vape users identify triggers, discuss coping strategies and develop a relapse prevention plan, among other methods.<\/p>\n Aside from QuitVape, another 334 people were placed on IMH\u2019s Mandatory Etomidate Rehabilitation Programme.<\/p>\n This was in lieu of prosecution, with the programme focused on education, counselling and support to help etomidate offenders overcome their addiction.<\/p>\n Vapes laced with the anaesthetic agent etomidate<\/span><\/a> are known as Kpods, which can trigger zombie-like behaviour in users, along with seizures and psychotic episodes.<\/p>\n Lee Whee Khee, a senior counsellor at NAMS, said many of these users wanted help but did not know where they could get it without getting into trouble with the law.<\/p>\n Then in July 2025, The Straits Times launched its anti-vaping campaign<\/span><\/a>, Vaping: The Invisible Crisis, to raise awareness of the scourge.<\/p>\n This was followed by a clampdown on vaping by the authorities, with campaigns and changes to the law<\/span><\/a> that made clear the available channels of support, including those at IMH.<\/p>\n Lee said the public campaigns reassured abusers that they could seek help without fear of being penalised.<\/p>\n He added that most users think they can simply stop vaping and move on. Then, reality strikes.<\/p>\n He said some sought help as etomidate addiction had strained their relationships.<\/p>\n Others had been using etomidate at work, causing them to get fired for poor job performance.<\/p>\n Lee said misusing etomidate can significantly reduce potassium levels in the body, which can lead to severe muscle weakness, breathing difficulty and cardiac risks.<\/p>\n He added: \u201cThe incorporation of treatment into the overall response sends an important signal the focus is not solely on punishment. There is a clear message help is available for those who are willing to come forward.\u201d<\/p>\n He said some patients were brought in by their concerned loved ones, and had enrolled in the programmes with some resistance.<\/p>\n <\/a><\/figure>\n But with familial support, many have stayed on the path of recovery.<\/p>\n However, Lee warned that the fight against vaping is far from over<\/span><\/a>, and urged those who need help to come forward.<\/p>\n He said: \u201cIt is not a matter of whether there will be new variants or new substances coming; it is a matter of when.<\/p>\n \u201cHelp is always available. Do not wait until the addiction gets serious before thinking about seeking treatment.
