Fans think that V6 makes Vampire: The Masquerade too similar to Dungeons & Dragons<\/p>\n

White Wolf’s previously teased Gen Con announcement turned out to be for Vampire: The Masquerade 6th Edition<\/em>, a new iteration of the long-running vampiric TTRPG. Unfortunately, Vampire: The Masquerade<\/em> fans aren’t taking too kindly to its changes.<\/p>\n

This new version of Vampire: The Masquerade<\/em>, which White Wolf also calls V6<\/em>, makes some pretty surprising changes. It merges vitae and willpower into a single health resource, adds new metacurrencies that players and storytellers can use to influence their actions, emphasizes the balance between the Beast and Humanity systems, and generally streamlines some of the TTRPG’s other systems to make them more accessible. <\/p>\n

While lead game designer Diogo Nogueira said V6 <\/em>is “a faster engine that still keeps the things Vampire: The Masquerade<\/em> veterans love” in a press release, the response from longtime fans has not been that kind.<\/p>\n

A quick look at the Reddit communities for Vampire: The Masquerade<\/em> or all White Wolf tabletop games reveals plenty of player complaints about how V6 brings the niche TTRPG more in line with mainstream ones like Dungeons & Dragons<\/em>. <\/p>\n

One particularly brutal Reddit post argues that “V6<\/em> looks like a DND 5e<\/em> hack for someone who doesn’t want to learn a new system,” nitpicking smaller changes, like the addition of combat reactions. In a now-locked thread on White Wolf’s Reddit, fans complained about features like the new Drama metacurrency for Storytellers impacting what V6 GMs can do and the lack of retro-compatiblity with V5<\/em>. White Wolf clearly has a lot of work to do if it wants to win fans over with V6<\/em>. <\/p>\n

The bright spot in all of this backlash is that V6 <\/em>is now being playtested. There are actual plays going on at Gen Con this weekend, and White Wolf released playtesting materials on Demiplane, so anyone can try it out and give feedback. Hopefully, White Wolf can make the right adjustments based on what it learns from that process, even if a new edition of any classic TTRPG will never please everybody.<\/p>\n
