.<\/strong><\/p>\nIs your Spider-Sense tingling? If so, it may be less of a Peter Tingle, and more of a burning sensation, as Spider-Man: Brand New Day is on fire with a lot of dangling plot points that need addressing.<\/p>\n
Sure, the movie finishes up this leg of Peter Parker\u2019s (Tom Holland) emotional journey in a satisfying manner, and concludes his battle with the not-so-villainous Jean Elaine Grey (Sadie Sink). But there are still bad guys out there, good guys in new situations, and end credits scenes that are, let\u2019s be honest, potentially extremely confusing.<\/p>\n
With that in mind, let\u2019s lay out some of the biggest burning questions we have after Spider-Man: Brand New Day, as well as some of the smallest, and see how well we can do in also answering them.<\/p>\n\n\nThwip!<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/aside>\n<\/section>\n<\/p>\n\n
Spider-Man: Brand New Day – Our Biggest Burning Questions<\/h3>\n<\/span><\/output><\/p>\n
Where Is Jean Grey Going?<\/h2>\n After the confrontation at the Damage Control facility, Jean Grey is (somehow) not arrested for Thought Crimes perpetrated on the city of New York, but rather is headed out of town on a bus. Where\u2019s she going? Well, the reported answer is Avengers: Secret Wars<\/u>, which likely takes place on a patchwork planet called Battleworld (more on that later). So in terms of her bus ride, at least immediately, she\u2019s not going anywhere.<\/p>\n
However, it\u2019s hard to see a bus heading out of New York City and into woodsy, possibly upstate Fall foliage and not think she\u2019s headed to Westchester, home of Xavier\u2019s School for Gifted Youngsters. To be clear, we don\u2019t know whether there is<\/em> an Xavier\u2019s school in the MCU, or if it\u2019s in Westchester, or if when director Jake Schreier\u2019s in-development X-Men movie<\/u> picks up Jean will still be on the bus, or somewhere else entirely. But in the lore of the Marvel Comics, Jean is Professor X\u2019s first student\u2026 So wherever the MCU lands with Marvel\u2019s Merry Mutants, the implication at the end of the movie is clear: Jean is headed towards her destiny with the X-Men. Did Spider-Man Accidentally Create Mutant Inhibitors?<\/h2>\n While we\u2019re talking X-Men, there\u2019s a very<\/em> big plot point that could potentially be used in the upcoming X-Men reboot movie from Brand New Day: Mutant Inhibitors. Spider-Man spends most of the movie wrestling with his surging arachnid DNA, and how to suppress it. Thanks to some coaching by Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo), aka the Hulk, he hits on the idea of an inhibitor chip, which he successfully uses on himself \u2013 as well as to suppress Jean\u2019s telepathic powers entirely.<\/p>\nHowever, both Bruce and MJ (Zendaya) warn him that this technology is extremely dangerous, and potentially suppressing something that needs to be expressed. MJ is more concerned about Peter; but Bruce\u2019s warning is about the ramifications of unleashing technology that can suppress any powers in a world already on edge about the idea of super-powered individuals.<\/p>\n
While there have been plenty of riffs about this type of technology throughout the decades, it\u2019s impossible to hear this in a movie that brings mutants into the MCU (ignoring the events of Ms. Marvel and The Marvels, as well as Avengers: Doomsday for the moment) without thinking Spider-Man\u2019s tech, which ends up in the hands of Damage Control, could be used on the burgeoning mutant menace.<\/p>\n
It’s very likely Peter Parker is responsible for something that will become a bane to mutant-kind.
\u201c<\/span><\/span><\/div>\nNormally in the Marvel Comics it takes the form of Inhibitor Collars, placed around a mutant\u2019s neck. Here, it\u2019s a chip, though Damage Control needs to keep it connected to a power source to keep it going. Point being, there\u2019s probably some refinement there before it pops up in an X-Men movie\u2026 But yes, very likely Peter Parker is responsible for something that will become a bane to mutant-kind.<\/p>\n
What Happened to William Metzger?<\/h2>\n Riffing off the previous point, the actual bad guy of the movie, William Metzger (Tramell Tillman) is in the wind at the end of the movie. While Bill Metzger was a minor antagonist in the comics, it\u2019s pretty clear here that his philosophy of preventing damage through Damage Control by rounding up super-powered beings can be extended very specifically to mutants in an X-Men movie, or movies.<\/p>\n
There are plenty of characters who fit this bill in X-Men comics, TV shows, and movies; from William Stryker and Henry Gyrich to Graydon Creed and beyond. So Metzger is far from out of place in a (potential) franchise that features mutant haters who either want to use, abuse, or eliminate the X-gene entirely. Whether we\u2019ll see him as the main villain of an X-Men movie or merely another threat in the background is, of course, TBD. But Jean and her future teammates are likely far from done with Metzger yet.<\/p>\n

Where Is Spider-Man in the End-Credits Scene, and Does It Make Any Sense?<\/h2>\n While there\u2019s no mid-credits scene, there is a Spider-Man: Brand New Day post-credits scene<\/u> and it\u2019s, uh, a potentially confusing one. In it, we get an animated shot of Ned\u2019s (Jacob Batalon) Spidey-Tracker app, which is searching for Spider-Man\u2019s location. We hear the app say \u201clocation unknown\u201d a few times as it zooms out, then moves away from Earth, and says, \u201clocation found\u201d with a little Spider-Man avatar floating in space. This is followed by the white on black words \u201cSpider-Man Will Return,\u201d though it does not add \u201cin Avengers: Doomsday\u201d or \u201cAt a Russian Bathhouse.\u201d<\/p>\n
The basic interpretation here is that Spider-Man is off-planet, in space. The longer interpretation, or the smallest leap is that this is showing Spider-Man during the events of Secret Wars on Battleworld. The part of this that is potentially confusing, if correct, is that the assumption is we\u2019re following the rough plot of writer Jonathan Hickman\u2019s 2015 Secret Wars<\/u> comic book, which finds the multiverse destroyed and the remains coalesced into one patchwork planet called Battleworld, ruled by Doctor Doom (Robert Downey Jr.).<\/p>\n
If this is<\/em> setting up that Spider-Man (Holland, to be clear, not one of the other Peters) is on Battleworld, then how is the Spidey-Tracker still active on Earth, assuming Earth was destroyed? Or perhaps this is merely Spider-Man being taken off Earth in a Life Raft, a vehicle meant to survive the multiversal collapse which eventually lands on Battleworld, moments before Earth is destroyed. Or maybe this is just a fun animated sequence that indicates Spider-Man will be in space next time we see him, and don\u2019t worry about it too much? Either way, we\u2019ll likely know when Spider-Man returns \u2013 probably in 2027, though TBA.<\/p>\n<\/p>\nWhy Wasn’t The Punisher Arrested in the Hospital? (Or When Driving His Punisher-mobile Around?)<\/h2>\n Unlike Spider-Man, who is beloved by all of New York, The Punisher (Jon Bernthal) is a murderous vigilante on the run. So why wasn\u2019t he arrested while hanging out in the hospital with Peter \u2013 who, we should mention, he also shot? This is, in general, an ongoing question with the character, who isn\u2019t saving people so much as murdering criminals. And as far as we\u2019ve seen in Daredevil: Born Again<\/u> and The Punisher: One Last Kill<\/u>, there\u2019s nothing that has particularly cleared his name in any way.<\/p>\n
Perhaps one could venture that when Wilson Fisk (Vincent D\u2019Onofrio) murdered all those people in the Born Again Season 2 finale and was exiled from New York, those who were in his semi-legal Red Hook prison were cleared of all crimes. But The Punisher has definitely killed more people after that happened. And while one could accept his secret ship-base is a good hideout, or when he\u2019s in the middle of a pitched tank battle driving his Punisher-mobile \u2013 which really should be a car in the shape of a skull, let\u2019s be honest \u2013 he can evade the cops\u2026 Uh, but what about when he\u2019s sitting in a hospital for a few days? It\u2019s not like he wears a mask (other than when he wears Spider-Man\u2019s mask), so anyone would recognize Frank Castle pretty much the second he stumbled through the doors.<\/p>\n
The short answer here is also \u201cdon\u2019t worry about it\u201d with a side of maybe they gave him a pass because he was helping Spider-Man (did we mention he was the one who shot him?). But yeah, it strains logic a little bit that one of the biggest mass murderers in New York City history gets to hang out wherever he wants with no repercussions.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\nNow these guys… they’re *real* friends!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/output><\/p>\n
Does Ned Really Remember Peter? And if So, Why Doesn’t MJ?<\/h2>\n Oh boy. At the end of the movie, Peter sees Ned eating in the corner bodega he frequents, goes over and reintroduces himself as Peter, and they do their little secret handshake. Ned says, \u201cPeter?\u201d and the movie leaves it open as to whether he\u2019s just repeating his name, or the spell has broken and he remembers his best friend.<\/p>\n
While this is skirting dangerously close to the nearly impossible to answer question \u201chow does Doctor Strange\u2019s amnesia spell from No Way Home actually work,\u201d based on the plot of the movie it seems likely that Ned does<\/em> remember Peter, and has his memory back. What are we basing this on? That there\u2019s clearly a natural connection between Peter and Ned that MJ picks up on when they\u2019re all hanging out and playing with LEGOs. That seems to draw a line between Ned and Peter\u2019s relationship, and MJ and Peter\u2019s relationship.<\/p>\nAnd that gets to the second half of this: if Ned remembers Peter after the secret handshake, why don\u2019t similar interactions cause MJ to remember? The reason, to throw an idea out there, is that MJ has grown, and Ned has not. One of the things that\u2019s clearly explicated through Ned\u2019s TikTok account in the opening montage of the movie is that other than an ill-advised goatee, Ned is pretty much the same. Compare that to MJ, who explains she changed her major at MIT. She\u2019s different, she\u2019s grown, she wants different things. Ned is for better or worse the same guy Peter was friends with all those years ago.<\/p>\n
The reason Ned remembers but MJ doesn’t, to throw an idea out there, is that MJ has grown, and Ned has not.
\u201c<\/span><\/span><\/div>\nDoes that mean MJ can never<\/em> get her memories back? Jean Grey tells Peter that there are no memories of him at all in her head, but it\u2019s also magical amnesia, something Jean might not be able to sense with her sci-fi telepathy. Chances are MJ can<\/em> get those memories back, just not right now, in this movie, and not the same way as Ned.<\/p>\nIs MJ Still With Her Boyfriend?<\/h2>\n While we check in with a number of characters, we don\u2019t really get any sort of romantic resolution with MJ\u2019s love life \u2013 or job life, for that matter. She\u2019s not with Peter because she doesn\u2019t remember him, and based on a conversation she has with him on the Punisher\u2019s ship (why isn\u2019t that<\/em> shaped like a skull?), she doesn\u2019t love her current boyfriend (played by Eman Esfandi) either. We don\u2019t have an answer for this one because there aren\u2019t any real clues provided. And while we\u2019d like to believe that MJ breaks up with Unnamed Boyfriend #1 after meeting Peter, and gets back together with him, it seems far more likely that\u2019s saved for another movie. Also, is the boyfriend named Paul<\/u>? Harry Osborn? Dr. Michael Morbius? We\u2019ll never know. Maybe.<\/p>\nHow Is Peter Paying for Rent and Buying Food and Flowers and Also All That Equipment?<\/h2>\n Here\u2019s the sort of nitpick that makes this movie no fun to think about: how is Spider-Man paying for all of his s**t? Part of this gets back to the amnesia spell, and the fact that Peter Parker effectively does not exist, meaning that there are no records of his name, he has no ID, and there are no pictures of him\u2026 Or at least nobody remembers him from those pictures, something MJ and Ned effectively establish when they don\u2019t recognize Peter from high school, know Spider-Man saved them several times, but don\u2019t remember anything else around those events.<\/p>\n

Spider-Man: Brand New Day Images<\/h3>\n<\/span><\/output><\/p>\n
What this all amounts to is that any job Peter Parker gets has to be off the books, unless he fakes an ID. Which (don\u2019t do this, kids) is possible, of course. But even beyond that, we\u2019re told that he\u2019s Spider-Man full time in the movie, between stopping crimes, working with detective Jean DeWolff (Liza Col\u00f3n-Zayas), and spending all his time in his attic apartment making tech and repairing his costume. As far as we\u2019re aware, Spider-Man isn\u2019t a paying job (and if it is, how does one apply), so where is Peter getting all the money for this?<\/p>\n
To take some of these one by one, in terms of the tech we can fudge it a bit and say \u201cdumpster diving,\u201d which is essentially where we first found Peter in the MCU\u2026 It\u2019s possible he\u2019s scrounging materials from discarded \u201ctrash\u201d and making it work. And it\u2019s also possible that, as we see sometimes in the comics, Spider-Man can be getting little gifts here and there: a hot dog from a vendor, a slice of pizza while he swings by, as a thank you from the city of New York.<\/p>\n
But even with all of that, he still needs to rent his apartment (which could<\/em> be off the books since it\u2019s an unused attic space but is likely not rent free), buy food on the regular, and also buy flowers for Aunt May\u2019s (Marisa Tomei) grave. So how is he paying for this? Previous Spider-Man movies have taken pains to show Peter trying to juggle a job, being Spider-Man, and his love life. Brand New Day completely ignores the job aspect which likely would have added another element to an already stuffed movie, but would have perhaps helped smooth over some questions. Perhaps he\u2019s getting a stipend from the New Avengers? Maybe?<\/p>\nWould a Real New Yorker Eat Little Caesars?<\/h2>\n Wherever Peter is getting his money, it\u2019s downright offensive to see him, a real New Yorker, spending it on Little Caesars \u2013 promotional tie-in be damned. Yes, there are more than a dozen Little Caesars locations in New York City, but unless Peter is dumpster diving for leftover Webberoni pies, he\u2019s supposed to be a dyed in the wool New Yorker and would not be caught dead having fast food pizza instead of a real New York slice. Heck: Little Caesars is more expensive<\/em> than your regular $1 slice shop in NYC, which are perfectly adequate and usually three thousand times better. So if he\u2019s hard up for money, Little Caesars, Dominos, Pizza Hut, whatever, those would all be the last<\/em> choice.<\/p>\nOn the other hand, a bodega being stocked with Tom Holland\u2019s non-alcoholic beer brand Bero<\/u>? That tracks.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n<\/span><\/p>\nWhy Did They Send Bruce Banner to a Mental Hospital When All of This Was Pretty Easily Explained and Fixed?<\/h2>\n While Jean Grey is headed out of town on a bus, William Metzger is missing, and The Punisher gets to walk in and out of public spaces with no repercussions\u2026 Bruce Banner is blamed for turning into the Hulk, wrecking Damage Control, and is sent to a mental hospital? We understand that Bruce is understandably distraught about losing control of the Hulk after all this time\u2026 Indeed, this movie is the first time we\u2019ve purely seen the rampaging version of the Hulk since he was defeated by Thanos back in Infinity War, which was set in 2018 in the MCU timeline, while Brand New Day is set in 2028. It\u2019s been a decade! Dude has got to be bummed out!<\/p>\n
But at the same time, none of this was his fault; it was Jean Grey controlling him (up until she lost control). And now that he\u2019s turned back to Banner, he can set up a new inhibitor wrist-band thingy to suppress \u201cthe other guy\u201d and go back to teaching at Empire State University.<\/p>\n
Look, the short answer here is that while a news report seems to imply Banner was committed to a mental hospital, it is more likely he committed himself. This also likely explains why Hulk is not in Avengers: Doomsday, as he\u2019s too busy being sad and trying to heal. Unless he is in Avengers: Doomsday, in which case this explains nothing.<\/p>\n

Why Didn’t Damage Control Arrest Jean Grey With Her Sister?<\/h2>\n One of the odder moments in the movie is a flashback where Jean Grey\u2019s sister Sara Grey (Olivia Booth-Ford) is arrested by Damage Control, while Jean is left alone. Ostensibly Sara possesses Jean and makes her run far enough away that Damage Control can\u2019t catch her; but in reality, she only runs to the other side of a field in a park. And also, isn\u2019t Jean a threat as well? Why doesn\u2019t Damage Control arrest her too?<\/p>\n
The best answer we\u2019ve got is that in the scene, Sara has the power to jump bodies, but Jean hasn\u2019t quite developed her mutant power that much yet. So it\u2019s likely Damage Control didn\u2019t see her as a threat they needed to control, and perhaps didn\u2019t even know Jean has the same powers as Sara. Does that make sense? Not really \u2013 they had to see her running away. And since both Jean and Sara were seemingly abandoned by their mother for having mutant powers, Damage Control likely knew that as well.<\/p>\n
So why didn\u2019t they grab Jean? Because otherwise there would have been no plot for the movie.<\/p>\n
