It’s been nearly a decade since point-and-click mystery Thimbleweed Park<\/em> was released to critical acclaim. While the game did receive a small spinoff in 2020 that wrapped up some loose threads, the classic adventure game seemed finished. So it came as a surprise on Thursday when creator Ron Gilbert announced a sequel is in development.<\/p>\n

Gilbert announced on his personal blog Grumpy Gamer that production on Thimbleweed Park 2<\/em> has begun. The game will be self-published, as was the first. Gilbert also revealed that a number of developers from the first Thimbleweed Park <\/em>are returning, including Mark Ferrari, David Fox, Octavi Navarro, Robert Megone, and co-creator Gary Winnick. The sequel is due to be released in early 2028 for Linux, macOS, and Windows PC. Gilbert shared that he will be starting a dedicated Thimbleweed Park 2 <\/em>dev blog soon.<\/p>\n

The original Thimbleweed Park <\/em>was part of the point-and-click revival of the 2010s, alongside games like Kentucky Route Zero<\/em> and Broken Age<\/em>. The story, which took major inspiration from and parodied Twin Peaks<\/em> and The X-Files<\/em>, followed two FBI agents as they investigated a murder in the titular town. The town itself was populated by numerous strange residents whom players get to know during the investigation.<\/p>\n

Gilbert and Winnick are best known for their work on classic point-and-click adventure games from LucasArts, where the pair worked on projects like the Monkey Island series and Maniac Mansion<\/em>. The latter served as one of the biggest influences on Thimbleweed Park<\/em>. While other games in the genre’s revival sought to improve and tweak the point-and-click formula, Thimbleweed Park<\/em> stuck closely to the iconic titles of the 1980s and 1990s.<\/p>\n

Gilbert and the rest of the development team couldn’t have picked a better time to return to Thimbleweed Park<\/em>‘s X-Files<\/em>-inspired world. The series itself is going through a renaissance, with Ryan Coogler (Black Panther<\/em>, Sinners<\/em>) currently developing a reboot.<\/p>\n
