The Aqua 10 Roller AE does not make matters any easier and at a glance, looks remarkably similar to the higher-end Aqua 10 Ultra Roller. It uses the same roller-style mopping system and even has the same 30,000Pa suction power, but the “AE” in its name is important because this is the cheaper version, with a list price of S$1,499 compared with S$2,099 for the Ultra Roller.

That is still a lot of money for a robot vacuum, although Dreame is currently selling both models at considerably lower promotional prices. More interesting though, is how it has brought the cost down. The company has not removed the roller mop away from the Roller AE model and has instead pared back some of the cleverer technology found in the original. These include the Ultra’s FluffRoll system, retractable LiDAR sensor, camera-assisted object recognition, larger battery and more capable threshold-climbing legs.

It sounds like an extensive list of compromises, but I found that some of those omissions mattered far less than others. The Roller AE still cleaned much like the Ultra Roller in my home, particularly across the marble and parquet flooring. What changed was not so much what the floor looked like afterwards, but how much preparation and supervision the robot needed along the way.

What has Dreame actually taken away?

In shape and form, the Aqua 10 Roller AE robot vacuum is very similar to the Aqua 10 Ultra Roller.

Photo: HWZ

The AquaRoll system is still key here. Its 260mm roller is supplied with clean water through 12 nozzles, while a scraper removes the dirty water as it turns. In other words, it is constantly rinsing itself instead of dragging the same damp and increasingly grimy pad around the home. I have reviewed more than a few robot vacuums with two rotating mop pads and, while they can be useful for everyday maintenance, some of them are really glorified wet wipes once the pads become dirty.

The Roller AE does a pretty good job too. My floors are evenly cleaned without the circular streaks that rotating pads sometimes leave behind, and it dealt well with the usual footprints and smudges that build up over time. Perhaps more importantly, its results were not far removed from what I remembered getting from the Ultra Roller. That surprised me because the AE does not have FluffRoll, the small counter-rotating roller used by the Ultra to lift the mop fibres and stop them from becoming “flattened” during a cleaning run.

I would say the difference is there, but you would have to really squint hard at a marble or shiny floor to notice it. That said, I thought the Ultra Roller maintained its scrubbing action a little better over a longer session and had an advantage with more stubborn marks. With the AE, I was slightly more inclined to send it over an area for a second pass rather than assume one run would be enough. But for the ordinary dust, paw marks and light stains that make up most daily cleaning, I do not think I would have noticed anything was missing had I not used the Ultra Roller before it. Dreame may have removed one of the technologies that helped made the flagship model one of the best roller mop vacuum cleaners, but not the underlying system that made it good.

Even the docking station is not spared from compromises.

Photo: HWZ

Vacuuming is much the same story. As mentioned earlier, the AE retains the 30,000Pa suction figure and the HyperStream DuoBrush, using two different brush designs to pick up dirt without collecting a thick bundle of hair around the roller. Here, the AE pretty much mirrors the Ultra in vacuum performance – which is already pretty good at handling loose dirt across my hard floors easily, while the extending side brush helped to gather dust from along hard-to-reach areas as well as around furniture legs.

So far, then, the savings do not feel especially painful. It is when the AE starts making its way around the home that the difference becomes easier to spot. The Ultra Roller has a retractable LiDAR turret and uses cameras together with 3D structured light to identify objects in its path. The AE returns to a by-now antiquated fixed LDS turret and dual-laser structured-light sensing. Don’t get me wrong, it can still map homes effectively, avoid furniture and follow an orderly cleaning route, but it is just not as good at recognising, and then avoiding, the smaller bits of clutter and obstacles that might appear on the floor.

In that sense, the Ultra Roller gave me more confidence that it could recognise something unexpected and work its way around it, whereas the cheaper model feels more dependent on having a reasonably clear floor to begin with.

The other cutbacks will depend heavily on the size and layout of your home. Its 5,200mAh battery is smaller than the Ultra Roller’s 6,400mAh, although the AE still managed to clean my 5-room flat (a point-block configuration) without needing to stop for a recharge. It is also rated to cross a 2.2cm single step or a 4cm double-layer obstacle, compared with the Ultra’s ProLeap system that allows it to climb up to 6cm.

The detergent container is missing. It still automatically empties the dust box, washes the roller with water heated to 100 degree Celsius and dries it with hot air afterwards. Unlike the Ultra, however, the AE has no built-in cleaning-solution compartment, so it mops using water alone unless you purchase the optional detergent container – which feels a little miserly.

Final thoughts

Despite the compromises, the Aqua 10 Roller AE is still easy to recommend.

Photo: HWZ

After spending time with the Aqua 10 Roller AE, I kept coming back to the same thought: Dreame has removed quite a lot, but it has mostly cut from places that do not feel like deal breakers. The Ultra Roller remains the model I would choose for its more complete, all-round cleaning capabilities, but the AE is hardly a poor alternative when there is S$500 separating the two. At its current promotional price of S$899, I can forgive the smaller battery, simpler navigation and even the missing detergent container. At the very least, it retains the roller-mopping performance that made the Ultra Roller so good in the first place.

Dreame has released so many robot vacuums over the past year that even I sometimes need a moment to remember which model does what.
