Following similar announcements from Apple, Google has confirmed that its next-generation Pixel devices will be more expensive.

In an interview with 9to5Google, Shakil Barkat, Google’s Vice President of Devices and Services, revealed that there will be pricing “adjustments” across the entire Pixel family, including the upcoming Pixel 11 series and Pixel Watch 5.

Barkat attributed the decision to what he described as a “severe, supplier-driven RAM memory crisis”, adding that the economics of building consumer electronics have changed dramatically. “There’s never been an increase in memory prices like the world’s going through right now,” he said. Barkat added that Google had worked to shield customers from supply chain fluctuations “for as long as possible”.

If Google’s explanation gives you déjà vu, you’re not imagining it. Much like Apple, the company said it had shielded customers from rising component costs for as long as possible before deciding that the current environment was no longer sustainable. It even cited soaring memory prices as the main culprit – almost the same script Apple used weeks earlier.

Despite the higher prices, Google says it remains committed to “delivering premium experiences at an accessible value”, suggesting that it will continue to position the Pixel lineup as a competitively priced alternative to other flagship smartphones.

Beyond raising prices, Google is also attempting to tackle the problem from the software side. The company says it is making a “dedicated effort” to reduce memory requirements across Android and the broader app ecosystem, allowing devices with less RAM to continue delivering a smooth user experience.

Google’s announcement comes as the semiconductor industry faces one of its most challenging periods in recent history. Demand for AI servers and high-bandwidth memory has driven memory prices to record highs. Industry analysts expect the supply-demand imbalance to persist until 2030, increasing the likelihood that other consumer electronics brands will soon follow suit with price hikes.

The next Made By Google event is set to be held on 12 August at 6 pm ET in New York City (13 August, 6 am, SGT), where Google is expected to unveil the Pixel 11, Pixel 11 Pro, Pixel 11 Pro XL, Pixel 11 Pro Fold and Pixel Watch 5. Pricing details will be confirmed during the launch event, where consumers will learn the full extent of the anticipated increases.

Source: 9to5Google

The ongoing global memory chip shortage is claiming another victim.
