A commuter’s power bank stored in a backpack reportedly emitted smoke on a MRT train, prompting the evacuation of passengers at Buangkok station on Wednesday (July 29).<\/p>\n
Pictures of the incident circulating on social media platforms Xiaohongshu and Reddit show a bag and personal items covered in white powder on the platform floor.<\/p>\n
Officers from the police and Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) are also seen at the MRT station.<\/p>\n
A Xiaohongshu user said in a post at 5.20pm that they had noticed a burning smell onboard a train travelling from Hougang to Buangkok station.<\/p>\n
“At the next stop, Buangkok, everyone exited the train. A power bank inside someone’s bag was releasing smoke,” the user claimed.<\/p>\n
One commuter, Chen Yongwen (transliteration), told Lianhe Zaobao that a TransCom officer had sprayed a dry powder fire extinguisher and smoke from the backpack stopped shortly after.<\/p>\n
Chen claimed that a man, who appeared to be in his 30s, said he owned the bag.<\/p>\n
“The officers asked if there was a power bank in the backpack, but I didn’t hear his answer clearly,” he said.<\/p>\n
When AsiaOne reached Buangkok MRT station at about 6.30pm, about 15 officers from the police and SCDF were at the scene.<\/p>\n
The backpack and other items appeared to have been taken away and staff were cleaning the white powder residue.\u00a0<\/p>\n
A burnt smell still lingered in the air.<\/p>\n

Train services were operating normally.<\/p>\n
No injuries report: SBS Transit<\/h2>\n
In response to AsiaOne’s queries, SBS Transit spokesperson Grace Wu said smoke was observed emitting from a bag on the station platform of Buangkok MRT at about 5.06pm.<\/p>\n
A TransCom police officer at the station responded to the incident, and MRT staff were on site to assist commuters. SCDF was also activated in response to the incident.<\/p>\n
“No injuries were reported, and train service at Buangkok MRT station resumed within five minutes,” the spokeswoman added.<\/p>\n
SCDF told AsiaOne it was alerted to a power bank emitting smoke at Buangkok MRT station at about 5.10pm.<\/p>\n
The TransCom police officer attended to the incident using a dry powder fire extinguisher before SCDF\u2019s arrival.<\/p>\n
It is investigating the cause of the incident.<\/p>\n
