Should you pay so much for one? I spent a weekend with it to find out.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_base_1s8rd_1 _default_1s8rd_12\">High COE prices have pushed car prices in Singapore to new heights. This partially explains why one of Mercedes-Benz\u2019s entry-level sedans now costs over S$300,000. And once you factor in the changes to the PARF rebate scheme, it becomes clear that car ownership has the potential to become financially ruinous. Or at the very least, extremely expensive.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><iframe class=\"_base_1xuyu_1 _tiktok_1xuyu_26\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/embed\/v2\/7667786665234042132?lang=en\" style=\"aspect-ratio:0.5625\" allowfullscreen=\"\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share;\" loading=\"lazy\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p class=\"_base_1s8rd_1 _default_1s8rd_12\">But the way I see it, car ownership has always been more about wants than needs. If we approached this problem with a sound mind and a calculator, surely the more mathematically logical solution for most people would be public transport plus the occasional Grab ride? This platform was conceived so that the CLA could be developed as both a hybrid and a battery electric car. It\u2019s certainly less conspicuous on a dark-coloured car like this test car. Whether that\u2019s a good or bad thing will depend on how you feel about light bars in general. I think they tend to split a car\u2019s front fascia in a way that might be too severe. The rear light bar is more agreeable to my eyes. It accentuates the rear, making it look slightly wider than it actually is.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"_base_1s8rd_1 _default_1s8rd_12\">The side profile is the new CLA\u2019s best angle.\u00a0The CLA has always been known for its swooping coupe-like silhouette, and\u00a0it\u2019s no different with\u00a0this new model.\u00a0Keen-eyed readers will probably notice that it looks like a larger car than its predecessor. Indeed, it measures 4cm longer and has a 6cm longer wheelbase. I was told it\u2019s larger even than the W205-generation C-Class.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"practicality-features\" class=\"_subHeading1_1k87u_111 _base_1k87u_1\">Practicality &amp; features<\/h2>\n<p><iframe class=\"_base_1xuyu_1 _tiktok_1xuyu_26\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/embed\/v2\/7667788676574760212?lang=en\" style=\"aspect-ratio:0.5625\" allowfullscreen=\"\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share;\" loading=\"lazy\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p class=\"_base_1s8rd_1 _default_1s8rd_12\">The larger dimensions have had a positive effect on the cabin. Coupled with the expansive panoramic glass roof (standard on all CLA models), this new car feels more spacious on the inside. The glass\u2019 special coating also seems to do a better job at keeping heat out than any other car I\u2019ve experienced. It helps also that the air-con provides arctic-levels of cooling.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_base_1s8rd_1 _default_1s8rd_12\">Leg room in the back is good, though headroom can be a little problematic for taller folks because of the steeply sloping roofline.\u00a0Indeed,\u00a0apart\u00a0from the low roofline for rear passengers, <b>the amount of space inside the new CLA feels more comparable to a larger class of car<\/b>. That said, Mercedes appears to have prioritised cabin space over boot space. The claimed capacity of 405L is below average, and the opening aperture isn\u2019t the widest. There are hard plastics in the lower regions of the cabin, and there are no paddle-shifters even though you can select gears manually.\u00a0And instead of having dedicated buttons to control all the windows, Mercedes has\u00a0instead\u00a0decided to\u00a0have\u00a0a system where you\u00a0push\u00a0a button to select between the front two and rear two windows to control.\u00a0Why go through all this trouble to save on one button? Still on the subject of buttons, there isn\u2019t one on the steering wheel that will let you skip your music.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_base_1s8rd_1 _default_1s8rd_12\">In terms of software, <b>the new CLA is Mercedes\u2019 first car to get MB.OS<\/b> \u2013 the brand\u2019s all-new infotainment operating system &#8211; which was designed from the ground up and will underpin all future Mercedes models. It\u2019s very intuitive to use, mostly because it fundamentally behaves like Android or iOS. There are apps for your streaming services like Spotify and YouTube, and you can even download additional apps from an app store. There\u2019s also an AI-powered voice assistant that\u2019s powered by ChatGPT. As a result, the CLA200 never feels sprightly, even if its claimed power output and 0-100km\/h timing of 8 seconds are respectable.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"_base_1s8rd_1 _default_1s8rd_12\">One more thing to note about the transmission: it doesn\u2019t have paddle-shifters. Instead, you shift gears manually using the column-mounted gear lever. It\u2019s vastly improved over its predecessor, and must surely be one of the best-riding cars in its class. Wind and road noise are well suppressed too. The wheels can be driven by the engine or the electric motor, together or separately. However, the engine can\u2019t charge the battery. And speaking of which, t<b>he battery capacity is a mere 1.3kWh<\/b>, so it won\u2019t run on battery power alone for any extended period of time. While this system confers some fuel efficiency gains, it\u2019s not as significant as a more advanced series-parallel system \u2013 like those used by Toyota or Honda hybrids. Consequently, fuel consumption was merely alright.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_base_1s8rd_1 _default_1s8rd_12\">In my\u00a0weekend with the car, I travelled 384 km, and the trip computer showed a return of\u00a0<b>6.7L\/100km<\/b>.\u00a0This translates to around <b>14.92km\/l<\/b>.
