Interestingly, the Vision Pro was also first unveiled at WWDC – in 2023, to be exact. Introducing the device at WWDC would also give developers several months to build apps and optimise experiences before it reaches consumers.

One of Apple’s biggest points of differentiation is expected to be user privacy. Gurman reports that the company is testing “a slew of new hardware and software-related privacy features” that are absent from many of today’s smart glasses.

To achieve this, Apple has reportedly explored multiple hardware configurations, including designs with cameras that assist AI-powered features such as visual recognition and contextual awareness, while intentionally omitting the ability to capture photos or record videos. The company has also experimented with versions that do not include integrated cameras at all.

Such an approach would help address one of the biggest concerns surrounding AI-powered eyewear. As smart glasses become increasingly capable of understanding their surroundings, consumers and regulators alike have raised questions about surveillance, consent, and data collection.

Gurman previously reported in April that Apple was experimenting with four different designs, including a large rectangular frame that has discreet oval-shaped camera modules. The glasses are also expected to rely heavily on the iPhone for processing and connectivity, while Siri AI will serve as the primary interface for interacting with the device.

Competition in the smart glasses market has intensified over the past few years. Meta has found success with its Ray-Ban smart glasses, while Google and Samsung are developing Android XR-powered alternatives. With AI becoming the next major computing platform, Apple is reportedly under increasing pressure to establish its presence in the category.

That urgency may have already influenced the company’s broader hardware strategy. Apple is rumoured to have scaled back development of future Vision Pro models in favour of accelerating work on lightweight smart glasses.

Source: Bloomberg via MacRumors

Apple’s long-rumoured smart glasses could finally make their public debut at WWDC 2027.
