As AI takes over the world in the metaphorical sense \u2013 for now, at least \u2013 it is the perfect time to turn to the films that have depicted AI over the years, and what they have said about the world in the process.<\/p>\n

Here is a selection that have given AI a robust presence in popular culture over the past few generations.<\/p>\n

As James Cameron<\/span> recently said, \u201cI warned you guys in 1984, and you didn\u2019t listen.\u201d<\/div>\n
Cameron\u2019s dystopian science fiction series \u2013 particularly the 1984 original and its 1991 sequel<\/span>, both with Arnold Schwarzenegger<\/span> \u2013 imagined a future world where a military computer system named Skynet grows sentient and, after humans try to \u201cpull the plug\u201d, starts a nuclear holocaust.<\/div>\n

\u201cThey say it got smart,\u201d John Connor\u2019s father says in the original film. Ever since, The Terminator<\/em> has loomed as perhaps the pre-eminent cinematic vision of a world leading to AI rule.<\/p>\n
