It is a fitting prelude to <em data-qa=\"ContentSchemaRender-defaultRenderMapFunctions-Component\" class=\"css-1mniedq ex3nmsa15\">An Intimate Surrender<\/em>, artist Isaac Chong Wai\u2019s first solo live-art commission in the city he grew up in.<\/p>\n<div datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1xdhyk6 ec74h0k0\">The 36-year-old gay artist \u2013 who lives in Berlin and featured at the <span data-qa=\"Component-Text\" class=\"css-0 ef9u0v00\">2024 Venice Biennale<\/span> and 2025 Taipei Biennial \u2013 says he has drawn heavily on Chinese filmmaker Chen Kaige\u2019s 1993 epic film <span data-qa=\"Component-Text\" class=\"css-0 ef9u0v00\"><em data-qa=\"ContentSchemaRender-defaultRenderMapFunctions-Component\" class=\"css-1mniedq ex3nmsa15\">Farewell My Concubine<\/em><\/span> for his homecoming project.<\/div>\n<div datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1xdhyk6 ec74h0k0\">The film, based on a novel by Hong Kong writer Lilian Lee Pik-wah, stars the late <span data-qa=\"Component-Text\" class=\"css-0 ef9u0v00\">Leslie Cheung Kwok-wing<\/span> as a Peking opera star who clings to his art and his passionate devotion to his male co-star amid political upheaval and war in 20th century China.
