In the TikTok reel posted on July 11, Ilyas Elmi said the highlight of his Singapore trip was neither the attractions nor the food, but the sense of safety that allowed him to walk alone at night without worry, Singaporean news site Stomp<\/em> reported.<\/p>\n He admitted Singapore was “slowly creeping up the list” of his favorite destinations.<\/p>\n “I can hold my phone in the middle of the street just like this, by myself, and nobody does [anything to me],” he said of the country which was ranked the world’s second-richest by GDP per capita last year by the Economist.<\/p>\n “It’s really safe. I haven’t had a single bad interaction since I arrived,” he said.<\/p>\n Ilyas said he arrived in Singapore on July 11 and stayed until July 15. During the four-day trip, he visited Marina Bay, Gardens by the Bay, Chinatown and Sentosa, while making it a point to sample as much local cuisine as possible, AsiaOne<\/em> reported.<\/p>\n His video quicky drew mixed reactions from netizens.<\/p>\n Singaporean netizens welcomed Ilyas’s praise, with many thanking him for highlighting the country’s reputation for safety and hospitality.<\/p>\n “It’s nice to hear Singapore mentioned in a positive light,” one user wrote, while another commented: “Thanks so much for all the positive compliments about our country.”<\/p>\n Many also echoed his view that Singapore is remarkably safe, joking that the only thing to fear after dark is the supernatural.<\/p>\n “The scariest part about Singapore at night would be ghosts,” one netizen quipped.<\/p>\n Not everyone, however, shared the same enthusiasm.<\/p>\n Some commenters described Singapore as “boring” and complained about its hot weather.<\/p>\n Earlier this month, a British traveler has sparked online backlash after describing Singapore as “the worst country” he has traveled to in a TikTok video.<\/p>\n Singapore received 8.19 million international visitors in the first six months this year, down 1.7% year-on-year due to slowdown from major source markets such as Indonesia and India.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n
