SINGAPORE: A popular content creator from Somalia appeared to be utterly charmed by Singapore and could not stop praising the city-state in recent videos.\u00a0<\/p>\n
On TikTok on July 11, Ilyas Selmi (@ilyaselmi_), who posts about his culture as well as his various travels around the planet, said that Singapore \u201cis creeping up the list\u201d of his favourite destinations.<\/p>\n
\u201cWho knew one day can have you feeling like this,\u201d he wrote in the caption to his post.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt hasn\u2019t even been a day, and it\u2019s already creeping up the list,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Mr Ilyas went on to say that his favourite thing in Singapore has not been the food or sightseeing, but that he could hold up his phone in the middle of the street while he was all alone, and feel safe, with nothing threatening him or his belongings.<\/p>\n
\u201cNobody doing nothing,\u201d he said, panning his cellphone camera all around.<\/p>\n
He also emphatically suggested Singapore as a destination for women, especially for those who prefer to travel solo.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s really safe! You\u2019ll be all right!\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Heartwarmingly, he also gave a shoutout to Singaporeans.<\/p>\n
\u201cPeople here are so nice, they\u2019re so down-to-earth y\u2019all,\u201d he said, adding that he\u2019s not had a single negative interaction since he arrived.<\/p>\n
Mr Ilyas\u00a0 also said, \u201cEverybody\u2019s talkative, everybody\u2019s truly so nice, and it\u2019s just like that will really make a trip, y\u2019all, how the people are.\u201d<\/p>\n
While other travellers may take kindness or even civility for granted and expect to be treated well in the countries they visit, unfortunately, at times and in certain places, for the more melanated among us or for those who come from certain countries, this is not always the reality.<\/p>\n
The young content creator ended his video by saying, \u201cI really do suggest Singapore to anybody who\u2019s starting out to travel, I really do.\u201d<\/p>\n
On July 14, he posted another video where he dared viewers to name a better skyline than Singapore\u2019s, saying it is the best he has ever seen.<\/p>\n
His first post has since gotten more than 150,000 views, and commenters had a lot to say.<\/p>\n
When one wrote, \u201cThe only crime at 2 am is the taxi fares,\u201d another quickly added, \u201c\u2026and the humidity.. uugghh!\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re more afraid of ghostly encounters than muggers at 2 to 3 am. That\u2019s how safe SG is. I even dry my laundry at the laundromat after midnight because it\u2019s quiet, peaceful, it\u2019s cooler, and there\u2019s no crowd,\u201d another added.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs a woman who has a teenage daughter, I love the fact that she can come home alone at odd hours and so can I,\u201d a third wrote.<\/p>\n
Others, however, seemed surprised that Singaporeans were described as nice and talkative.<\/p>\n
One wrote, \u201cWelcome to SG! People can seem cold at first, but they warm up quickly once you start talking to them. Enjoy yourself!\u201d \/TISG<\/p>\n
