Samsung recently announced new foldable phones at its Galaxy Unpacked event in London. It now has two book-style foldable phones. The Z Fold8 Ultra is the successor to last year\u2019s Z Fold7, while the Z Fold8 is more compact and features a new wider form factor.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The Z Fold8 is certainly the more interesting of the two, not only because it has a new form factor \u2013 when unfolded it has a wider display with a 4:3 aspect ratio<\/b> \u2013 but also because Apple\u2019s rumoured upcoming foldable phone is also expected to adopt a similar form factor.<\/p>\n
By launching the Z Fold8 first, Samsung removes the risk that Apple\u2019s foldable phone turns out to be great and it has nothing comparable to offer. Furthermore, the move to call the larger\u00a0foldable phone the Z Fold8 Ultra is particularly clever.<\/p>\n Apple is expected to unveil its first foldable phone later this year.<\/p>\n Photo: AI-generated image<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n That\u2019s because many believe Apple would call its foldable iPhone the \u201ciPhone Ultra\u201d. Now if that\u2019s the intention, Apple might have to rethink that name<\/b>, because then its \u201cUltra\u201d foldable would be smaller than Samsung\u2019s. Not only that, the Z Fold8 Ultra has a triple camera system, whereas the foldable iPhone is expected to launch with just two.\u00a0That won\u2019t be a good look for Apple if they both share the \u201cUltra\u201d name.<\/p>\n The upside to all this is that the Z Fold8\u2019s new form factor has been mostly positively received. Many have praised (us included) for its compactness and how the 7.6-inch main display with its 4:3 aspect ratio is more conducive to consuming content.\u00a0<\/p>\n Apple should surely feel more optimistic about its first foray into foldable phones. As for the name, they could get around it by simply calling it the \u201ciPhone Fold\u201d. This would also leave room for a more advanced foldable model in the future.
