Like many, I recently watched the Spain vs Argentina final of the Fifa World Cup 2026. For all that the former\u2019s solid sense of teamwork shone through the 120-plus minutes, the game was ultimately blighted by some of the worst examples of sportsmanship (or lack thereof) from the Argentine squad.<\/p>\n

There was a collective sense of Schadenfreude as Enzo Fernandez was sent off<\/span> for his brutish antics on the pitch, but that was not the end of the aggression.<\/div>\n

Argentina\u2019s lasting legacy from this particular season will be one defined by the petulance of Leandro Paredes\u2019 man-child strop after the final whistle as he went for the throat of a Spanish player, and the entire team standing disrespectfully with their backs facing the winners on the podium.<\/p>\n

In the hospitality world, tantrums and meltdowns are also aplenty, though they may not always happen in front of cameras beaming their antics to millions around the world. But sour grapes are most certainly a sadly common ingredient in the perceived high stakes of food competitions, world rankings and awards.<\/p>\n

Having had plenty of experience in crafting and hosting restaurant awards in my previous role, I have not been impervious to the snide sidechats and complaints of favouritism, of restaurateurs and chefs feeling entitled to certain accolades above others. And this is taking place in an arena that is, at its heart, completely subjective, as everyone\u2019s taste differs.<\/p>\n

In the world of food, it has always been challenging to compare apples to oranges. One year, I recall there was controversy over a more homestyle gastropub receiving top billing alongside fine dining hotel restaurants.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
