{"id":70857,"date":"2026-07-23T02:12:10","date_gmt":"2026-07-22T18:12:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=70857"},"modified":"2026-07-23T02:12:10","modified_gmt":"2026-07-22T18:12:10","slug":"singapore-pm-wong-unveils-new-cabinet","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=70857","title":{"rendered":"Singapore PM Wong unveils new Cabinet"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">SINGAPORE \u2013<!-- --> Newer and younger political office-holders will take on more responsibilities while continuing to work with experienced hands, in a Cabinet reshuffle announced on the back of recent political resignations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">In unveiling the latest line-up, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong said on July 22 that Singapore needs both experienced leaders to steer the country through immediate challenges, and a new generation ready to take it forward.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">GE2025 newcomers Jeffrey Siow and David Neo will be promoted to full minister, while Sim Ann will become Second Minister for Foreign Affairs and Home Affairs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Another first-term politician, Jasmin Lau, will helm the Manpower Ministry as acting minister, with Tan See Leng relinquishing the portfolio. He will take on the post of Minister for Trade and Industry (Energy and Industry).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Labour chief Ng Chee Meng <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/politics\/labour-chief-ng-chee-meng-to-be-minister-in-the-prime-ministers-office?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"inline font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"typography-test-id\">returns to Cabinet<\/span><\/a> as Minister in the Prime Minister\u2019s Office, and K. Shanmugam <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/politics\/shanmugam-appointed-senior-minister-continues-in-his-national-security-home-affairs-roles?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"inline font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"typography-test-id\">will be Senior Minister<\/span><\/a>, PM Wong said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Two backbench MPs and former senior civil servants \u2013 Foo Cexiang and Shawn Loh \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/politics\/cabinet-reshuffle-foo-cexiang-shawn-loh-to-be-promoted-to-ministers-of-state?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"inline font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"typography-test-id\">will become ministers of state<\/span><\/a>. The pair are first-term MPs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The ruling party is continuing its leadership transition, PM Wong said, adding that he has worked closely with the new office-holders over the past year. Siow has been Acting Transport Minister since <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/politics\/cabinet-reshuffle-jeffrey-siow-and-david-neo-appointed-acting-ministers-7-new-mps-to-take-political?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"inline font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"typography-test-id\">the last set of Cabinet changes in May 2025<\/span><\/a>, while Neo has been Acting Minister for Culture, Community and Youth.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">They will remain in these ministries after their promotions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The changes will take effect progressively from July 27, with some kicking in later.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"PM Wong outlines latest Cabinet changes\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/zJ7w-2zie8E?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">PM Wong said: \u201cStepping into political office is never easy. There is no manual for the job, and no substitute for experience.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cBut they (new office-holders) have settled into their roles well, earned the confidence of their colleagues and of the civil servants they work with, and shown that they are ready for greater responsibilities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Speaking at a press conference at the National Press Centre, he addressed the timing of the reshuffle, saying that the composition of the Cabinet is reviewed annually, but unexpected changes also have to be taken into account.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">There have been two political resignations in 2026 so far, he noted.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Acting Minister-in-charge of Muslim Affairs Faishal Ibrahim <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/politics\/faishal-ibrahim-resigns-over-online-messages-with-a-female-member-of-the-public?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"inline font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"typography-test-id\">resigned on July 20<\/span><\/a> over a \u201clapse of judgment\u201d in handling his interactions with a woman. He was also Senior Minister of State for Home Affairs.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Before that, senior minister of state Koh Poh Koon <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/politics\/koh-poh-koon-to-step-down-from-public-office-pmo?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"inline font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"typography-test-id\">stepped down from political office<\/span><\/a> on June 1, citing family reasons.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">PM Wong said he took these into account in reshuffling the Cabinet, and unexpected changes mean that the Government has to continue building a \u201cstrong pipeline\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cIt is not just the ministers; you need younger office-holders, you need good backbenchers.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">On Shanmugam\u2019s appointment to Senior Minister, the PM said Shanmugam and Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong are the two most experienced members of Cabinet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">As the Government goes through a leadership transition, PM Wong said he continues to value their counsel, and on his decision not to appoint a second deputy prime minister alongside Gan Kim Yong.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">He said the current structure provides a strong senior leadership team, but the situation is always evolving and as leadership renewal continues, it will continue to be reviewed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The current structure is appropriate, he noted, adding that the Cabinet also has three coordinating ministers.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Shanmugam is one, as Coordinating Minister for National Security, and PM Wong in May 2025 also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/politics\/dpm-gan-three-coordinating-ministers-to-form-core-of-pm-wongs-cabinet?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"inline font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"typography-test-id\">appointed Chan Chun Sing and Ong Ye Kung<\/span><\/a> to the position overseeing other parts of Government.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Shanmugam will retain this role, and carry on as Home Affairs Minister \u2013 the first senior minister to continue to helm a ministry.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">PM Wong also addressed a question on continuing in the finance portfolio, which he has held since 2021. \u201cI am always looking to find someone who will be ready to be finance minister,\u201d he said, describing his search for a successor as a \u201cwork in progress\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Asked how he sees the core of the party\u2019s next generation of leaders taking shape, PM Wong said he had asked office-holders from the latest batch to come to the press conference to show Singaporeans that renewal is happening.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">PM Wong was flanked by Siow and Neo.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Lau, and another GE2025 newcomer Goh Pei Ming, who was promoted to senior minister of state, were also there, along with Zaqy Mohamad, who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/politics\/i-will-continue-to-engage-and-better-understand-the-needs-of-the-muslim-community-zaqy-mohamad?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"inline font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"typography-test-id\">took over as Acting Minister-in-charge of Muslim Affairs<\/span><\/a> from Faishal.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Prime Minister Lawrence Wong unveils Wong, who is also the party\u2019s secretary-general<!-- -->.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">People develop at different paces, and some are ready for larger appointments earlier while others will take more time, he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cMy job is to assess, to entrust them with responsibilities when they are ready, and ultimately to put people in positions where they can best contribute to Singapore,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u00a0That is what he has done with the latest round of changes, he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The Government will continue keeping its veterans and experienced leadership while refreshing the team. \u201cThat is the Singapore way of leadership renewal.
