Since Ayam Gepok Anakmak has been getting quite popular and it’s just a stone’s throw from my block, my friend and I decided to give it a try for lunch. We arrived on a Monday at around 1:30pm, and there wasn’t any queue. There was a sign advertising Nasi Lemak (S$4.50), Original Gepok (S$8.50), and Rempah Gepok (S$10). We asked to order the Nasi Lemak, but the staff at the counter simply replied, “Don’t have!” Thinking it was sold out, we asked if the gepok came with white rice instead. He answered, “Ya, white rice. If you want, that side got chicken rice,” while pointing to another chicken rice stall at the other end of the coffeeshop. To be honest, the response came across as rather unfriendly and dismissive. A simple explanation or recommendation would have made the experience much more pleasant. Good customer service doesn’t cost anything, even in a coffeeshop setting. As for the food, it was average. The highlight was definitely the chilli. I chose Level 3, and it had a nice spicy kick that I really enjoyed. However, the fried cabbage was quite oily, the chicken was rather dry, and the rice was a little too wet and clumpy. The tofu and tempe portions were also very small. Overall, this will probably be a one-time visit for me. At this price point, I don’t feel it offers good value for money. While the chilli was excellent, the food quality and the service didn’t leave a good impression.
