Red A, Garden Bakery, Lee Kung Man: these are just a few of the many recognisable Hong Kong heritage brands that tell the story of how the former British colony evolved into the major international metropolis it is today.<\/p>\n

We take a look at how these brands, as well as several others, have been a part of that momentous history.<\/p>\n

Early colonial growth spurt<\/h3>\n

The former Hong Kong International Airport, commonly known as Kai Tak Airport, opened in Kai Tak in 1925 and helped transform the British colony from an unknown port town into a global hub.<\/p>\n

The city\u2019s population rose from 530,000 in 1916 to 725,000 that year, and while most of that growing population was made up of ethnic Chinese, society was largely racially segregated. Western brands were highly sought after but often unattainable as they were usually too expensive for locals who mostly worked in menial labour.<\/p>\n

Seeing the growing desirability of Western baked goods in Hong Kong, Singapore-born Cheung Tze-fong<\/span> convinced his brother-in-law to open Garden Bakery with him in 1926, with a mission: \u201cMay the Chinese eat better.\u201d<\/div>\n

The company was named after the Hong Kong Zoological and Botanical Gardens, where Cheung got the idea for the bakery. What began as a humble shop in Sham Shui Po subsequently became one of the most recognised bakery and confectionery manufacturers in Hong Kong, supplying virtually<\/span> all of the city\u2019s restaurants, caterers and fast food outlets.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
