Unfortunately, this legendary naval battle opens with El Impoluto coming at you at full speed, which doesn’t leave enough time to evade the first ramming attack, so you’re forced to brace for impact. Use Lucy Baldwin’s “perfect brace” ability just before impact to greatly lower the damage. Hit any remaining fire barrels with the swivel guns while El Impoluto remains nearby. This is also a great opportunity to use your mortars; it’ll depend on speed and distance, but generally speaking, dropping them about a ship’s length ahead of El Impoluto (see the picture below, right side) should result in significant damage.

<picture>
        </picture>Graphic: Marloes Valentina Stella/Polygon | Source images: Ubisoft via Polygon

If you’ve dealt a lot of damage to El Impoluto, the ship may turn away before ramming you, but if it doesn’t, be ready to use perfect brace. If you’re quick enough, shooting the fire barrels can damage La Dama Negra, too.

Unfortunately, you won’t be able to trail behind La Dama Negra consistently, as this slow ship is still faster than your poor old Jackdaw. It’ll sail away, slow down after a while, turn its side to you and fire both its broadside cannons and mortars. This presents a risky but rewarding opportunity; after avoiding the damage with perfect brace, you might be able to ram-dash into the ship’s side. Despite the side armor, this would still deal pretty good damage.

If you’d rather not risk it, simply avoid the damage and try to move behind La Dama Negra again. Whenever you’re not behind La Dama Negra, just try to avoid its side (apart from the ram-dash opportunity) and keep firing your mortars — the ship is way too sluggish to evade them.

Once La Dama Negra is down to two-thirds and one-third of its HP, it’ll sail away from you and launch an intense, continuous rain of fire mortars. It’s really hard to avoid them, so you’ll have to rely on perfect brace here.
