{"id":69985,"date":"2026-07-19T18:08:17","date_gmt":"2026-07-19T10:08:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=69985"},"modified":"2026-07-19T18:08:17","modified_gmt":"2026-07-19T10:08:17","slug":"celebrating-wesley-tongsons-artwork-in-hong-kong-from-disciplined-to-raw-and-visceral","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=69985","title":{"rendered":"Celebrating Wesley Tongson\u2019s artwork in Hong Kong, from disciplined to raw and visceral"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<br \/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.i-scmp.com\/sites\/default\/files\/styles\/1280x720\/public\/d8\/images\/canvas\/2026\/07\/16\/8a4971dc-a874-4155-9494-b521f5e344b8_970d9fd6.jpg?itok=SfAEWa41&amp;v=1784194264\" \/><\/p>\n<div id=\"\">\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">More than a decade after his death, Hong Kong artist Wesley Tongson is being celebrated with a comprehensive survey of his experimental ink paintings at the Asia Society.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Titled \u201cSinging and Dancing with Brush and Ink: The Art of Wesley Tongson\u201d, it marks the first major exhibition of his work at a leading local institution since the early 2010s.<\/p>\n<div datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1xdhyk6 ec74h0k0\">With nearly 30 works on loan from major Hong Kong museums, including <span data-qa=\"Component-Text\" class=\"css-0 ef9u0v00\">M+<\/span> and the Hong Kong Museum of Art, as well as private collections and the Wesley Tongson Charitable Trust, the exhibition\u2019s five sections explore Tongson\u2019s distinctive style as it evolved alongside \u2013 and was shaped by \u2013 deeply personal conflicts and reflections.<\/div>\n<div datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1xdhyk6 ec74h0k0\">His work is intensely intimate, reflecting his struggles with schizophrenia, his deep spirituality \u2013 he practised <span data-qa=\"Component-Text\" class=\"css-0 ef9u0v00\">Zen Buddhism<\/span> but was also influenced by Christianity and Taoism \u2013 and a fluid gender identity, says Cynthia Tongson, the late artist\u2019s sister and director of the Wesley Tongson Charitable Trust.<\/div>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">\u201cHe painted for himself. He\u2019s all for himself, and that\u2019s why all the work is not about any statement or anything. It\u2019s his own expression,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">\u201cHis painting comes from the middle voice, a spiritual void.
