{"id":69674,"date":"2026-07-18T11:03:46","date_gmt":"2026-07-18T03:03:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=69674"},"modified":"2026-07-18T11:03:46","modified_gmt":"2026-07-18T03:03:46","slug":"mother-tongue-a-cornerstone-of-education-system-pm-wong","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=69674","title":{"rendered":"Mother tongue a cornerstone of education system: PM Wong"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">SINGAPORE \u2013 <!-- -->Mother<!-- --> <!-- -->tongue languages connect Singaporeans<!-- --> <!-- -->to their roots, values and cultural heritage, said Prime Minister Lawrence Wong.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cThey help us understand where we came from and they shape who we are,\u201d he added in a speech on July 17 at the Singapore Tamil Teachers\u2019 Union\u2019s (STTU) 75th anniversary dinner.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">PM Wong said mother tongue languages also reflect the Republic\u2019s identity as a multiracial and multi-religious nation, where its citizens are \u201cSingaporeans first and foremost\u201d while remaining deeply connected to the rich traditions of their respective cultures.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">That is why the learning of mother tongue languages is a cornerstone of Singapore\u2019s education system, he said. However, he noted that mastering the languages is not an easy task.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cFor Tamil, the challenge can be even greater \u2013 because students may have fewer natural opportunities to speak, read and use the language outside the classroom,\u201d PM Wong said, adding that Tamil language teachers therefore play a critical role.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The Government is committed to working closely with STTU in its mission to support Tamil teachers and the teaching of Tamil, while continuing to bring together educators, families and community partners to celebrate the teaching and learning of mother tongue languages, he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The<!-- --> <!-- -->union also works closely with the Ministry of Education through mentorship and advisory programmes to support Tamil teachers, he added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cTogether, these efforts have helped attract new teachers, support younger educators and strengthen the profession for the longer<!-- --> <!-- -->term,\u201d PM Wong said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The union understands that language learning needs to go beyond the classroom, he said, citing the Tamizhil Yosi Tamizhil Vaasi (Think In Tamil, Read In Tamil) campaign as an example.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The campaign reminds young people that Tamil is not just a language for examinations, but a living language for communicating, creating and connecting with others.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cWhen every part of the community plays its role, Tamil will continue to flourish as a living language in Singapore,\u201d PM Wong said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Teacher Shruthika Kumar, who attended the celebrations, said her interest in the Tamil language peaked when her Tamil teacher in junior college encouraged her to pursue it as a career.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cI want my students to have that same light-bulb moment where they realise the beauty of the language,\u201d said the 22-year-old.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The daughter of STTU president Danapal Kumar, Shruthika now teaches at her alma mater, Yishun Town Secondary School.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cIt is a full-circle moment for me, I remember what it felt like to sit in classes here,\u201d she said, adding that she had thought Tamil was just about exams when she was in school.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Shruthika said she aims to incorporate artificial intelligence into her lessons to make them more interactive and engage students, helping them to support students pursuing Tamil at the tertiary level and beyond.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The memorandum of understanding was witnessed by labour chief<!-- --> <!-- -->Ng Chee Meng and Minister of State for Culture, Community and Youth Dinesh Vasu Dash, who serves as chairman of the Tamil Promotion Committee.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">PM Wong also unveiled the union\u2019s revamped website, a one-stop repository of research papers, seminar materials and teaching strategies. The website will be available to educators worldwide.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Also unveiled during the celebrations was an exhibition documenting the union\u2019s journey and contributions, as well as STTU\u2019s historical resource book, The Sanctuary Of Power.
