{"id":69333,"date":"2026-07-17T05:29:44","date_gmt":"2026-07-16T21:29:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=69333"},"modified":"2026-07-17T05:29:44","modified_gmt":"2026-07-16T21:29:44","slug":"gamestop-ceo-ryan-cohen-insists-sony-killing-physical-discs-doesnt-matter-at-all-to-his-company","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=69333","title":{"rendered":"GameStop CEO Ryan Cohen Insists Sony Killing Physical Discs Doesn&#8217;t Matter at All to His Company"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"\">\n<p data-cy=\"paragraph\" class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\">GameStop CEO Ryan Cohen has sparked a fiery debate in the gaming community after remarking that sales of physical games are \u201ctotally irrelevant&#8221; to his business.<\/p>\n<p data-cy=\"paragraph\" class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\">Cohen made the divisive statement in a July 16 interview with <u>Bloomberg TV<\/u> after being asked how GameStop could be impacted by Sony\u2019s industry-changing decision to <u>stop printing physical game discs for new PlayStation games<\/u> starting January 2028.<\/p>\n<p data-cy=\"paragraph\" class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\">In response, he argued that the bulk of GameStop\u2019s income hinges on sales of collectibles, rather than gaming software, insisting that the games themselves are chump change compared to the figures, merch, and trading cards GameStop is currently focused on putting in stores.<\/p>\n<p data-cy=\"paragraph\" class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\">\u201cIt doesn&#8217;t matter. It doesn\u2019t matter at all,\u201d he told the outlet. \u201cSoftware&#8230; it mattered in the past. Software today makes up less than 12% of the business, and collectibles makes up over half the business. Ape Escape\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"progressive-image jsx-2896921488 image aspect-ratio aspect-ratio-16-9 jsx-2605834259 jsx-2338608387 hover-opacity\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP\/\/\/yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7\" data-cy=\"progressive-image\"\/><span class=\"button-text jsx-729543028 button button--primary jsx-3381835873 jsx-4266531355 row-pagination-button next contained centered round large\" data-cy=\"paginate next\" title=\"Open Slideshow\"><span class=\"ign-icon right-chevron jsx-2750866048 jsx-2919720488\" role=\"presentation\" aria-hidden=\"true\" data-cy=\"right-chevron\" style=\"mask:url(https:\/\/kraken.ignimgs.com\/_next\/static\/media\/RightChevron.272be43c.svg?cors=1) no-repeat center center \/ contain;background:currentColor\"\/><\/span><\/button><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><\/span><\/output><\/p>\n<p data-cy=\"paragraph\" class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\">&#8220;GameStop is a business that was on the brink of bankruptcy, and everybody was betting against it for good reason,&#8221; Cohen said earlier in the interview. &#8220;And now the company is making more money than it&#8217;s ever made in its history.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p data-cy=\"paragraph\" class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\">When asked about the potential for Rockstar&#8217;s highly-anticipated Grand Theft Auto 6 to bring in big business for GameStop, Cohen completely ignored the question, choosing instead to discuss his failed <u>$55.5 billion bid for eBay<\/u> back in May.<\/p>\n<p data-cy=\"paragraph\" class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\">\u201cI want you to look your viewers in the eyes and tell them, \u2018Are you gonna bet on an entrenched management team running the business, or me, someone that went head to head against Amazon selling 30-pound bags of dog food, turned around a very tough situation at GameStop, and now the company is making lots of money?\u201d he posed.<\/p>\n<p data-cy=\"paragraph\" class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\">Earlier in the interview, Cohen gave an example of what future sales might look like at GameStop, saying the brand could \u201cunlock live commerce\u201d and use its physical stores for \u201csame-day authentication\u201d while using eBay\u2019s infrastructure \u2014 if the deal ever goes through \u2014 to \u201cbuild out an in-game, digital marketplace.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><output class=\"box-wrapper jsx-2673806401\" data-cy=\"article-video\"\/><\/p>\n<p data-cy=\"paragraph\" class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\">This is Cohen\u2019s latest viral interview following his bizarre remarks in a conversation with CNBC\u2019s Squawk Box program back in May, where he said he \u201cdidn\u2019t understand the question\u201d when asked by hosts where GameStop would get the money to purchase eBay.<\/p>\n<p data-cy=\"paragraph\" class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\">At the beginning of 2025, GameStop had around 2,325 locations in the U.S., but by the end of the year it had closed 590 of them. It then kicked off 2026 <u>by closing even more stores<\/u> as part of an effort to reduce costs.<\/p>\n<p data-cy=\"paragraph\" class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\">For years now some have called GameStop a dying bricks and mortar retailer as it looks to new and often bizarre ways to generate revenue. August 2023 saw the company <u>pull out of crypto<\/u>, and it <u>shut its short-lived NFT marketplace<\/u> just a few months later.
