Having directed more than 40 films and served as cinematographer on almost 70, his vast filmography spans triad films, psychological thrillers, romances, ghost stories, car-racing films, Category III adult features and even a musical.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">\u201cI don\u2019t feel that I have one style that I use in all my movies,\u201d he tells the South China Morning Post in an interview at the New York Asian Film Festival (NYAFF), where he is the 2026 Filmmaker in Focus.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">\u201cEvery time I choose a story, I try to find a new look to suit that individual movie \u2013 I don\u2019t try to apply the same \u2018Andrew Lau style\u2019 to each one. I don\u2019t want to say, \u2018This is in Andrew Lau\u2019s style,\u2019 because my style consists of many different styles.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3 type=\"h3\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"eh0yk8h0 css-17x7qa9 e1pqa4re1\">Behind the lens<\/h3>\n<div datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1xdhyk6 ec74h0k0\">Ultimately, it is Lau\u2019s skilful cinematography that binds his body of work together. He started his career in 1981 as a camera assistant at Shaw Brothers and worked his way up to cinematographer in 1985.
