The Audeze Maxwell, Beyerdynamic TYGR 300 R and MMX series, and the Hifiman x ROG Kithara come to mind. Regardless of its late entry, Fiio has thrown its hat into the ring with its new FG3 gaming headset.

The star of the show is probably its price tag, at just over S$100. If you’ve seen any of its competitors mentioned above, you’ll know that they typically go for twice as much, at least.

For the FG3’s price tag, you get a woofer-and-tweeter setup consisting of 50mm and 16mm dynamic drivers respectively. Multi-driver over-ear headphones are somewhat of a rarity, as unlike IEMs, off-axis driver placement and an increased distance from speaker to ear could both lead to phase issues.

Fiio’s attempt to prevent that is by a coaxial (or common axis) driver arrangement, similar to what you’d see in some car speakers. It’s one way to preempt any phase issues, and it’s been used in other personal audio gear we’ve covered before (like the Oppo Enco X3i).

As part of its relatively low price tag, it trades a 3.5mm connection for USB.

Image: Fiio

The drivers themselves cover a 10Hz to 40kHz frequency range via an electronic crossover. Apart from that, the FG3 also boasts a dual-core DSP chip for low-latency audio, an integrated DAC which supports 192bit/24kHz audio, and a built-in amplifier rated for up to 80mW of power.

No ANC to be found on the FG3, but it does support virtual 7.1 surround sound, environmental noise cancellation for calling, as well as sidetone monitoring. That last feature can be adjusted or turned off via the browser-based Fiio Control Web platform, which is also where you’ll find a 10-band EQ for the FG3.

Fiio says that the FG3 is plug-and-play for Windows, smartphones and laptops, though it does use a USB-C connection (USB-A adapter included) rather than 3.5mm. It’s a bummer, but there had to be a catch at this price point, and it does support UAC 1.0 and 2.0 connectivity for PS4 and PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Switch 2.

Availability and Pricing

Fiio’s FG3 will be available in Singapore around early August and will cost S$109.

It’s also worth noting that Fiio is working on a higher-tier FG5, a wireless gaming headset that features planar magnetic drivers instead of the dynamic drivers on the FG3. The company seems intent on competing with higher-end competitors through the FG5, but it also hasn’t given an exact release date. The FG5 was originally slated for a July release.

It’s not the first time that brands normally associated with audiophiles or professionals dip into the gaming headset market.
