{"id":68840,"date":"2026-07-15T11:36:01","date_gmt":"2026-07-15T03:36:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=68840"},"modified":"2026-07-15T11:36:01","modified_gmt":"2026-07-15T03:36:01","slug":"philippines-marcos-to-visit-singapore","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=68840","title":{"rendered":"Philippine&#8217;s Marcos to visit Singapore"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">MANILA \u2013 Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr is in Singapore from July 14 to 16 for talks with Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, as Manila seeks to deepen ties with the city-state ahead of Singapore\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/asia\/se-asia\/singapore-to-push-wider-regional-ai-adoption-cross-border-data-flows-as-asean-chair?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"inline font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"typography-test-id\">assumption of the ASEAN chairmanship<\/span><\/a> in 2027, taking over from the Philippines.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The Philippine leader departed for Singapore on the afternoon of July 14 and is scheduled to meet PM Wong on July 15. It will be his fourth visit to Singapore as president.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">President Marcos\u2019 spokesperson, Undersecretary Claire Castro, said the two leaders are expected to discuss expanding cooperation in trade and investment, environmental and healthcare issues, as well as regional and global developments. \u201cThe two leaders will continue strengthening ties between the Philippines and Singapore to create more opportunities for our citizens and to boost our cooperation involving different regional and global issues,\u201d Castro said at a July 13 press briefing in Manila.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The working visit comes as the two countries prepare for Singapore\u2019s taking over of the ASEAN chairmanship from the Philippines in 2027, highlighting their close bilateral ties.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The Singapore visit follows <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/politics\/singapore-and-the-philippines-to-expand-collaboration-in-renewable-energy-sustainability-and?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"inline font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"typography-test-id\">PM Wong\u2019s June 2025 trip to Manila<\/span><\/a>, his first after being sworn in for a fresh term as prime minister. The two countries agreed during the visit to expand cooperation in renewable energy and healthcare, and to work towards a legally binding carbon credit deal aligned with the Paris Agreement. The<!-- --> carbon credit<!-- --> deal was signed in April 2026.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">PM Wong, who declared then that relations between the two countries had \u201cnever been better\u201d, also pledged Singapore\u2019s full support for the Philippines\u2019 ASEAN chairmanship. He said the two sides would be working \u201cshoulder to shoulder\u201d as the rotating post passes from Manila to Singapore.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cIt is a partnership that has been carefully nurtured over the decades by successive generations of leaders and officials.
