They also accurately represented the lives of their yuppie target audience without didacticism or condescension.<\/p>\n<h3 type=\"h3\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"eh0yk8h0 css-17x7qa9 e1pqa4re1\">Filling a gap in the market<\/h3>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Chan recognised a market for quality contemporary commercial dramas outside the action genre when <em data-qa=\"ContentSchemaRender-defaultRenderMapFunctions-Component\" class=\"css-1mniedq ex3nmsa15\">Yesteryou, Yesterme, Yesterday<\/em> (1993), a <em data-qa=\"ContentSchemaRender-defaultRenderMapFunctions-Component\" class=\"css-1mniedq ex3nmsa15\">Wonder Years<\/em>-style movie he produced, was shelved by distributors because it lacked action. He subsequently founded UFO to cater to this demographic.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Importantly, UFO was not conceived as an art house film studio but rather as a mid-sized mainstream outfit that was \u201cnot against commercial films\u201d, Chan told the South China Morning Post in 1993.<\/p>\n<div datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1xdhyk6 ec74h0k0\">\u201cWe are not like the <span data-qa=\"Component-Text\" class=\"css-0 ef9u0v00\">Hong Kong New Wave<\/span> [of the late 1970s and early 1980s] or the French New Wave of the 1960s who wanted to do something totally different,\u201d he said. \u201cWe don\u2019t want to break rules or shock.
