There was plenty of excitement in the Singapore stock market this week.<\/p>\n

DBS, UOB and OCBC all reached record highs, with DBS crossing S$70 per share for the first time.<\/p>\n

I received that question several times over the past week. My answer is that it depends on what we are looking for from the stock.<\/p>\n

Are we buying it for our income pot,<\/a> where dividends and stability matter more? Or are we looking at it as an opportunity pot idea<\/a>, where future upside becomes the bigger consideration?<\/p>\n

This week, we look at what has been driving the strong performance of the Singapore banks, as well as the key risks to watch for investors wondering whether there may be more upside ahead.<\/a><\/p>\n

I have also seen plenty of comparisons between Keppel and Sembcorp Industries. We put the two blue chips side by side to find out which may offer the more attractive opportunity pot idea.<\/a><\/p>\n

Beyond Singapore, interest in artificial intelligence remains strong. What happened?\u00a0<\/h3>\n

US President Donald Trump announced that the ceasefire between the US and Iran had ended. However, both sides have agreed to continue indirect talks facilitated by Qatar.<\/p>\n

Despite the renewed uncertainty, oil prices remained relatively subdued at around US$72 per barrel. A prolonged conflict could push oil prices higher, adding to inflationary pressures and reducing the likelihood of interest rate cuts by the Federal Reserve.<\/p>\n

Minutes from the Federal Reserve\u2019s June meeting also showed that a few policymakers believed there was a case for raising interest rates.<\/p>\n

What does this mean?<\/h3>\n

Investors appeared to look past the renewed tensions in the Middle East and turned their attention to the second quarter earnings season.<\/p>\n

According to FactSet, S&P 500 earnings are expected to grow by a healthy 23.3% year on year in the second quarter.<\/p>\n

Interest in artificial intelligence also remained strong. SK Hynix raised US$26.5 billion through its US ADR listing, which saw significant investor demand and was more than seven times oversubscribed.<\/p>\n

Why should I care?<\/h3>\n

The\u00a0S&P 500<\/a>\u00a0rose by 1.2% for the week, while the technology focused\u00a0Nasdaq Composite<\/a>\u00a0closed 1.7% higher.<\/p>\n

The US 10-year government bond yield rose to\u00a0about 4.56% <\/a>from 4.49% at the end of the previous week.<\/p>\n

In Hong Kong, the\u00a0Hang Seng Index<\/a>\u00a0increased 3% for the week, as large Chinese technology stocks rebounded.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In Singapore, the\u00a0Straits Times Index (STI)<\/a>\u00a0gained 4.3% to reach new all time highs, supported by its safe-haven status amid geopolitical uncertainty. The gains were led by strong performance by DBS<\/a>, OCBC<\/a> and UOB<\/a>, which were seen as potential beneficiaries of the shift in rate environment.\u00a0<\/p>\n
