Testy times<\/h3>\n<div datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1xdhyk6 ec74h0k0\">If young men don\u2019t get enough sleep, they have a level of testosterone that is equivalent to that of someone 10 years older, says British neuroscientist and renowned sleep expert Matthew Walker. They may experience a breakdown in the delicate monthly timing system that keeps their reproductive health and moods stable. Those who get fewer than six hours of sleep can see up to a 20 per cent reduction in ovulation-inducing hormones.<\/p>\n<div datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1xdhyk6 ec74h0k0\">Lack of sleep disrupts our <span data-qa=\"Component-Text\" class=\"css-0 ef9u0v00\">metabolic systems<\/span> quickly. Getting only five hours of sleep for four nights in a row can negatively affect <span data-qa=\"Component-Text\" class=\"css-0 ef9u0v00\">blood sugar levels<\/span>, reducing insulin sensitivity to the extent that one could be classified as <span data-qa=\"Component-Text\" class=\"css-0 ef9u0v00\">pre-diabetic<\/span>, Walker says.<\/div>\n<div datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1xdhyk6 ec74h0k0\">The <span data-qa=\"Component-Text\" class=\"css-0 ef9u0v00\">immune system<\/span> is also affected: restricting a healthy person to just four hours of sleep for a single night results in an alarming 70 per cent drop in the activity of natural killer cells \u2013 cytotoxic white blood cells that act as the immune system\u2019s first line of defence.<\/div>\n<h3 type=\"h3\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"eh0yk8h0 css-17x7qa9 e1pqa4re1\">2.
