It\u2019s large, spacious, comfortable, and relatively affordable, and yet looks stylish. And we all know how far looks can go in swaying a purchasing decision.<\/p>\n<p><iframe class=\"_base_1xuyu_1 _tiktok_1xuyu_26\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/embed\/v2\/7660727033081023764?lang=en\" style=\"min-height:1100px\" allowfullscreen=\"\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share;\" loading=\"lazy\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p class=\"_base_1s8rd_1 _default_1s8rd_12\">Looks are subjective, but <b>most people I\u2019ve asked consider the J6 to be a looker<\/b>. It\u2019s boxy and has aesthetic cues reminiscent of a Land Rover Defender or Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon. Perhaps most crucially, it looks distinctive and has an air of confidence about its appearance, which is more than can be said for most of its rivals in the same price range. Most EVs in this price category look somewhat characterless and generic, but not the J6.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_base_1s8rd_1 _default_1s8rd_12\">This probably explains why they are becoming an increasingly common sight on our roads. I bet it\u2019s the main reason why Chery, the parent company of Jaecoo, has surged up the best sellers chart. It\u2019s now one of the top 10 best-selling car brands in Singapore. That, and of course, its price \u2013 which starts at <b>S$179,999 <\/b>(correct at the time of publishing). That price is for the less powerful Cat A version of the J6, which also happens to be the one we are testing. It has a single motor that develops around 130hp and drives only the rear wheels.<\/p>\n<p><iframe class=\"_base_1xuyu_1 _tiktok_1xuyu_26\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/embed\/v2\/7660726933130415380?lang=en\" style=\"aspect-ratio:0.5625\" allowfullscreen=\"\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share;\" loading=\"lazy\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p class=\"_base_1s8rd_1 _default_1s8rd_12\">Sadly, those charming good looks have their downsides. If you look around online, one of the biggest concerns potential buyers face is range. The Cat A version that we are testing has a battery capacity of <b>65.69kWh<\/b>, which is average for an SUV in this price category \u2013 but that boxy face doesn\u2019t cut through the air well. Interesting, the computer also claims an average power consumption of 12kWh\/100km, which, if you do the math, can\u2019t be right.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"_base_1s8rd_1 _default_1s8rd_12\">If my average power consumption was truly 12kWh\/100km, then 280km would have consumed 33.6kWh. Considering the J6\u2019s battery capacity is 65.69kWh, the car should have around 48% of charge left. Even accounting for idling and whatnot, it should not be left with just an 18% charge.<\/p>\n<p><iframe class=\"_base_1xuyu_1 _tiktok_1xuyu_26\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/embed\/v2\/7660726230131543316?lang=en\" style=\"aspect-ratio:0.5625\" allowfullscreen=\"\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share;\" loading=\"lazy\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p class=\"_base_1s8rd_1 _default_1s8rd_12\">Working backwards, 18% of capacity means the car consumed 82% of its battery to travel 280km. 82% of the J6\u2019s battery is around 53.7kWh, and <b>that means the actual power consumption is actually around 19.17kWh\/100km<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_base_1s8rd_1 _default_1s8rd_12\">This, in turn, means <b>the range of J6 is around 342km<\/b>, which, to be fair, is actually not far off the quoted official combined WLTP range of 354km. Bear in mind, however, that this is on a full charge. If you adhere to the 20% to 80% charging rule for daily driving, <b>then that range drops to just around 205km<\/b>. But considering the costs of cars in Singapore and the cost of a battery replacement should things go wrong, my take is that it\u2019s prudent to follow this rule to the extent that it makes sense for your lifestyle.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_base_1s8rd_1 _default_1s8rd_12\">What\u2019s undeniable is that this is less of a problem if the car has a high-capacity battery or is really efficient. If you are the latter, then even having to recharge every 200km is not going to stop you from getting a J6. And honestly, apart from the slightly tragic range, the J6 has few other faults. Unless you are willing to look for something used, there are few other new cars in this price category that combine practicality and charm in a way that this car does.
