{"id":67241,"date":"2026-07-09T05:54:04","date_gmt":"2026-07-08T21:54:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=67241"},"modified":"2026-07-09T05:54:04","modified_gmt":"2026-07-08T21:54:04","slug":"food-delivery-riders-targeted-in-loan-shark-scam","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=67241","title":{"rendered":"Food delivery riders targeted in loan shark scam"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div xmlns:default=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\">\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">Three food delivery riders allegedly became caught up in a suspected loanshark harassment case after arriving one after another with cash-on-delivery (COD) orders at the same condominium unit in Clementi.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">On July 7, TikTok user Klinsmann, who goes by @klins_05, shared <a class=\"text-primary-brand no-underline hover:underline\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@klins_05\/video\/7659454284378983687\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">three videos of the incident<\/a> at West Coast Vale condominium.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">Speaking to Stomp, 21-year-old <a class=\"text-primary-brand no-underline hover:underline\" href=\"https:\/\/www.stomp.sg\/singapore-seen\/customer-shares-delivery-pin-advance-12-lunch-never-arrives-foodpanda-apologises-mixed-messages?ref=inline-article-9326588\" target=\"_blank\" data-discover=\"true\" rel=\"noopener\">Foodpanda rider<\/a> Klinsmann Tay said the incident occurred at around 3.45pm on July 6.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">He had collected the order from an eatery at Ng Teng Fong Hospital before heading to the condominium unit.<strong class=\"font-primary\"> <\/strong>After knocking on the door, a woman \u2014 later identified as the landlady \u2014 informed him that the intended recipient, a tenant, was not at home.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">After checking the recipient\u2019s details on his phone, the landlady confirmed they belonged to her tenant but said the tenant had not placed the order.<\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"my-lg md:my-xl\">\n<p><hr class=\"flex-1 border-grayscale-100 lg:hidden\"\/><span class=\"text-grayscale-400 text-14 leading-16 font-primary text-center lg:text-left p-sm\">Scroll to continue reading<\/span><\/p>\n<hr class=\"flex-1 border-grayscale-100 my-md\"\/>\n<hr class=\"my-md border-grayscale-100\"\/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">Tay said he had already tried calling the recipient several times but was unable to get through. He also asked the landlady if the tenant was facing financial difficulties or had any issues with loansharks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">The landlady told him to contact the tenant directly as she was busy with a meeting. In the video, Klinsmann added a text caption quipping that she was trying to \u201cavoid liability\u201d before she closed the door.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">Left standing in the corridor, he began to suspect the order could be linked to a <a class=\"text-primary-brand no-underline hover:underline\" href=\"https:\/\/www.stomp.sg\/trending-now\/loan-shark-allegedly-uses-foodpanda-bak-kut-teh-order-harass-malay-resident-threatens-burn-house?ref=inline-article-9326588\" target=\"_blank\" data-discover=\"true\" rel=\"noopener\">loanshark harassment case<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"lg:text-28 lg:leading-33.6px pt-md font-primary text-24 font-bold leading-1.2\">Multiple food delivery riders affected<\/h2>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">In a <a class=\"text-primary-brand no-underline hover:underline\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@klins_05\/video\/7659456257492897042\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">subsequent video,<\/a> a second food delivery rider arrived at the same unit with another COD order. Tay intercepted him and warned him that the order might be part of a scam.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">Shortly afterwards, a third rider also turned up with yet another COD order, which Tay urged him to cancel.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">The orders were valued at $50 and $65 respectively.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">Tay said the riders would not be able to contact the recipient, claiming the registered phone number was from Malaysia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">To avoid food wastage, he suggested the other riders either eat it themselves or give it away.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">Later in the video, a condominium security officer arrived and appeared to speak with the landlady through the open door.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">Tay also explained the situation to the officer and said he believed the tenant might be involved in a loanshark dispute.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"lg:text-28 lg:leading-33.6px pt-md font-primary text-24 font-bold leading-1.2\">Rider questions COD system<\/h2>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">Klinsmann said he had to wait about 10 minutes to reach customer support before he could cancel the order \u2014 time that could otherwise have been spent completing another delivery.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">\u201cYou wasted your time, and you still haven\u2019t collected the payment because of this problem,\u201d he lamented. \u201cSo this collect cash thing (COD) has to be eliminated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">\u201cNo compensation for us, and no deduction from app wallet,\u201d he added. \u201cThat means we wasted our time coming here, because they don\u2019t pay us for the petrol and time\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">Tay told Stomp that three riders, including himself, arrived at the unit while he was there, though he believes more riders may have been affected after he left.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">He added that this was the third time he had encountered such an incident. In each case, riders were not compensated for the time lost or the distance travelled.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">When asked if there were any updates to the situation, he said Foodpanda\u2019s customer support requires riders to &#8220;waste\u201d 10 minutes contacting the helpline, followed by another 10 minutes to investigate the case.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">As a result, he estimated that the delay cost him up to $20 in lost earnings.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">Stomp has reached out to Foodpanda for comment.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"lg:text-28 lg:leading-33.6px pt-md font-primary text-24 font-bold leading-1.2\">\u2018Ban cash payments\u2019<\/h2>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">The three TikTok videos have garnered more than 500,000 views and 18,800 likes combined.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">Many riders shared that they \u201calways cancel cash jobs\u201d to protect themselves from similar situations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">\u201cThey should just ban cash payments,\u201d one user commented.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">One commenter argued that COD was the \u201cbest\u201d as there was no need to pay upfront. However, another netizen pointed out that the system could easily be abused.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">They replied, \u201cI agree, but some customers really like to take advantage by doing this type of scheme\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">Several netizens also praised Tay for staying behind to warn other riders.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">\u201cYou are awesome staying to help de-escalate the problem instead of just going on your way to do more deliveries,\u201d a netizen wrote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">Another added: \u201cMay you stay blessed for helping others\u201d.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"lg:text-28 lg:leading-33.6px pt-md font-primary text-24 font-bold leading-1.2\">Riders \u2018fully supported\u2019: Foodpanda<\/h2>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">In response to Stomp\u2019s queries, a Foodpanda spokesperson said all affected delivery partners had been \u201cfully supported\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The spokesperson said delivery partners would not incur any financial losses or performance penalties, as Foodpanda has policies in place to protect them from bearing the costs of fraudulent activities.<\/p>\n<p>Foodpanda added that it has implemented account verification processes, fraud prevention algorithms and ongoing monitoring of order patterns to detect and mitigate such cases.
